ASPI is used by burning software to communicate with IDE burners like CDRW & DVD burners. Windows XP has it's own ASPI, for earlier O/S you need to instal an ASPI layer.

Firmware is resident software that resides on devices like burners, CDROMs etc. The firmware contains the basic instruction set used by the operating system to communicate with and use the device.
Firmware upgrades are sometimes released by the hardware manufacturer to upgrade the devices capabilities or correct operational problems in the device.

A device should only be flashed (upgraded) with new firmware released and authorised by the device manufacturer. flashing a device with incorrect firmware can cause the device to totally fail.
