View Full Version : TV series encoding with CCE - output too big

Hi all,
Have been backing up some TV series recently - Black adder, Royle family - with the settings in the doom 9 guide. 2 questions for the experts:

1. Why don't I achieve anything like the compression with these that I do with movies?

2. What specific settings can I adjust in CCE to make the output files smaller? I'm only doing one pass, and would like to stick with that. I don't mind a slight drop in quality.

Cheers,
Simonc

If you are using 1 pass VBR, set the "Q" factor to a higher number, or if you are doing 1 pass CBR, lower the bitrate.

Thanks m8,
am doing VBR. What's the relationship between Q and size? I run at 60 usually, is 100 too much?

All I can tell you is to try it and see. Did your video captures get recorded at a very high bitrate? Or are these from DVD's?

Run them through bitrate viewer and see what the average is, and you can calculate from there what size you need, and what bitrate to set in order to get it.

A TV series would be 4:3 full screen. Movies are generally 16:9 widescreen. Obviously encoding large areas of pure black does not require the same bits as a full screen of video.

TV to DVD transfers sometimes are not the best quality, you might want to consider filtering it before encoding.
