I just bought a Liteon 48x12x48 to replace my Philips 16x10x40 burner. When I was using the Philips to burn cds with nero I never had any porblems and could easily get on with anything elso on the pc while the cd was burning, but with the Liteon the pc freezes every few seconds, it's like it's developed a stutter which has really stopped me being able to do anything else while a cd is burning which is no use !. Iam using the same drive to read the cds as I did when I had the Philips, a toshiba dvd/cd-rw combie drive which reads at 40x. I have 192mb ram and Iam using xp pro.

Does anyone have a suggestion ?, also what is a little odd is that the pc is picking up the Liteon as my D dive and the Toshiba as my E drive ?, would this have anything to do with it ?

Plz help me, any comments appreciated.

Try checking your new CDRW's DMA setting..

On XP, open up the Control-Panel, then under hardware devices, look for the IDE Controllers, it should be under Primary IDE/Secondary IDE controller setting there where you will find the DMA settings.

Plz help !, If I have to put up with this for another 24 hours Iam gonna whip the damn burner out and lob it as far as I can !

I recently had the same problem with a Pacific Digital Drive (which I believe is part of liteon). Anyway, you need to find your cd burner under IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. To do this (in XP) right click on My Computer then select properties/hardware/device manager/ATA/ATAPI controllers. Assuming your burner is on the secondary IDE channel click there and select the advanced settings tab. Device 0 is the master and device 1 is the slave, whichever one is your burner select PIO only in the transfer mode window.

If this doesn't work try using the system restore to bring your OS settings to before you installed the burner and see where things were set. Good luck

Gallacher...not quite sure how you're seeing your floppy as primary IDE or what IEO is.

How are your drives / CD ROMs cabled up ?

As shingunn says, you need to make sure whichever channel your burner is on is set to DMA and not PIO as it probably is.

The best thing to do is delete all entries under ATAPI and re-boot. Windows will then re-install them, hopefully, with DMA set as it should be.

Thanks guys for your help. Sorry I meant IDE !, Finally got to grips with it last night, it didnt help that my Toshiba comby was set as master and so was the Liteon !, set the Liteon to slave and ran it off my 2 way IDE cable which connects to my hard drive (Primary master), stuck the Toshiba on my second IDE cable and it worked better. Went into device manager found the DMA settings and changed them to DMA, Now it works alot better, but it is still a little jittery when the Liteon is burning, I reckon thats because I need more memory, running on 192mb just now could be doing with at least 256mb.

One last wee question, My 16x Philips took around 6 - 8 minuets to burn an audio cd from mp3 in nero. My spanking new 48x Liteon takes 5 even sometimes 6 minuets to to do the same, now Iam no maths genius but I was hoping for 3-4 minuet burning times that why I replaced the philips (Wish I hadn't now !). What time should I be expecting the Liteon to burn a cd in ?

Cheers Guys

It is a bit slow, I have a Plextor 48 speed and it averages around 3 - 3 1/2 mins. It can sometimes take 5 or 6 mins though. A lot will depend on where you're burning the tracks from i.e. from your hard drive or 'on-the-fly'.

The thing is, you have 'lead in' and 'lead out' times which don't change whatever burner you use. I think this is around 1 min at each end of the burn. The only difference a faster burner makes is to the time in the middle.

Cheers greenblade, I managed to get the burn time down to 3 minuets, changed a few settings and went for disc-at-once and its alot better now, thanks for all your help.
