Does anyone know if consumers (the average joe blog on the street) is going to be able to get dvdrs and burners (any/all formats) that will be larger then 4.7Gb? ie dual-layered
Or is the technology not around at the mo?
Or is it so that people cant do 1:1 of dvds?
Is it round the corner or a long way off?
Thanks!!!!!
edit:cant speell for love nor honey

May be worth posting this in the DVD forum, there'll be more experts in there.

Not yet, maybe not ever.
No news on any development on the technology.

I think I can safely say that you won't see dual layer blanks, at least not as a part of any current formats (DVD+R/-R/RAM).

but could current burners support them if the blanks came out or would it need a new laser/fireware, because dont the dual layer dvds just use a different wavelength laser?

No, as druid pointed out, the current formats do not support dual layers, and probably won't ever, espescially in the form of an upgrade. Its a limitation of the technical specefications of the formats if im not mistaken.
