I'm pretty new when it comes to recording, and I was wondering was is the best speed to record at (or does it even matter)? I heard burning at 48x is not good for some reason.

Thanks in advance.

The best speed is the fastest one that works.

The rumor says: for audio CDs, a little less. Is this right?

From my experience it is ok to write audio faster than games. I write audio at 32X and games at 16X on nero and 24X from clone image...with very little problems.

Liteon 32X, AMD900, 20GB, 256ram, firewire western dig 60GB external storage

I burn audio at x40 and have had no problems
I still can't get myself to burn ps2 at anything past x4 old habits die hard lol
but as celtic says try a few different speeds and see what works for you

Isn't it about the cdr media more than the burner???
I'm just wondering.

In theory it shouldn`t matter what speed you record at, or what it is you are recording (audio, games etc...) If you have a good burner, and good media you should get the same results every time. I have a plexator and never have any problems at any speeds.
I did once read an article (I cant find the link :( ) that suggested after testing, and went into alot of detail, that to obtain best results you should use the maximum speed that your burner will support, however logic would say that slower is better. Hare, tortoise etc...
I believe its pretty much an individual thing - find a speed that works and use that. In reality (unless you are mass producing or in a hurry) you dont need to produce your cd in under 3 mins... whats wrong with 5? or 10?

i find that i can write at full speed depending on the blanks and where it's gonna be played. My dvd player plays any media at any speed, but my car player is fussy with media and burn speed.

When I do 1 to 1 backups i rip and burn the slowest my patience will allow (4x) Basically because i want the burn to be as error free as possible. The more the drive has to error check, the worse it's gonna sound.
