Keymaster Feb 07, 2002, 10:47 AM From CDR-Info:
Plextor PX-W4012TA has been spotted at Japan. The drive's initial retail price was expected around 25.000 Yen ($187) but...Plextor dropped prices and now you will find drive at the price tag of 18,800 Yen - 20,800 Yen ($141-156).
zack371 Feb 07, 2002, 12:34 PM Thanks for the info, Keymaster.
Kinda makes you wonder how fast these things will get. I remember when my neighbor got a 1x drive years ago. Blank CD's were only $5 a piece!! I was so excited! Now they practically give blanks away, and we have drives as fast as this Plextor. Unbelievable!!

I recently read on a TDK link somewhere that the first CD recorders were
US$50,000 and that blanks were US$80 a piece!
Technology has always been like that though; hard drives used to be US$1200 for 40 megs (not gigs) in March 1989.
In January of 1995 a one gig HD was still US$850.
I also remember paying US$159 for 32K of RAM back in early 80s.
Now RAM is about 30,000 times cheaper!!!
Makes me wish you could "sell hardware short" like stocks and buy it back cheaper lol.
dcps2backups2k2 Feb 10, 2002, 12:57 PM man thats expensive.
Keymaster Feb 10, 2002, 09:04 PM VEFF you are correct. However, the $1200 for a 40 MB hard drive was a rip-off as I bought an 80 MB Seagate in 1986 for $900. My NEC 256 KB (16 color) video card was $500.
krsthekurupt Feb 10, 2002, 09:08 PM wow so that is a 40x burner? damn when are they going to come out with some media that fast
scousemouse Feb 11, 2002, 12:14 PM I WANT ONE!!

Now I have seen some information
about 64 bit processing being right around the corner!
User48 Feb 13, 2002, 01:10 AM Let's put it this way: There is no worse investment than a computer...
Keymaster Feb 13, 2002, 01:43 AM User48, true if you put it in a bank vault. But if you use one as Bill Gates did to write a Basic interpreter in 1976, it looks like a pretty good investment. Buying a new computer is one of those damned if you do and damned if you don't things. If you wait you will surely get a more powerful one cheaper, but you also will be much less productive while waiting. You have to find out where the curves intersect and make your move. ;) It's sort of like trying to decide to buy that new burner. You know you can wait and get one cheaper... but 40x for $150 US sounds pretty good. :D

I think dcps2backups2k2 was refering to the legacy equipment we were discussing.
