AMD Athlon 1.4GHz
256MB DDR PC2100
ECS K7AMA
IBM Deskstar 60GB
Western Digital 20GB
*300W PSU*

Right! I was happily surfing cdrom-guide and i heard a fan inside my PC speed up, after a while nothing happened so i thought nothing of it, but 5 minutes later my screen went blank the computer stayed on. I then smelled burning solder so i tried to turn the PC off with the power button but nothing happened then i heard ´fizzing´from the PSU so i went to unplug the power lead and BANG!! blue flash.

I then bought a new 350W PSU plugged it in the standby light comes on on the monitor but my PC refuses to turn on :(. I have tried graphics card and both HDs in a friends PC and all work well, i havenºt been able to test the memory or the processor.

Any help? Has the motherboard been fried? Apologies for the length of this post!

Hi m8,

Doesn't sound too good. I had a motherboard and CPU die as a result of a short circuit.

Can't really offer any advice other than testing the components in a different machine, sorry.

if the graphics card and HDs survived is this a good sign that the CPU´s still ok?

Sounds like the Mobo is toast.

Hard to say, I would be inclined to agree with Ant212 that it's the motherboard but without testing it there is really no way to say with any certainty.
Is anything at all happening when you try to power up? Fans or HDD spinning?

Also, it's a long shot but you could try swapping the power and reset switches (just at the motherboard headders) to test the switch itself.

I think your I/O cards and IDE devices survived because the mobo took the full blast...I have to agree with Osiris and Ant...I think your mobo is dead. But hey, at least you didn't lose everything. (I'm an optimist)
