this question has been asked a thousand times on this board try searching for a post on it. Personally I would go for AMD but that is just my personal opinion.
Wot are you going to be using this pc for?

As M_rsa said what are you going to use it for if you are going to do alot of encoding movies/mp3's then you might be better of with a P4 but if your going to be playing games, internet browsing then get a Athlon.

The Petium 4, faster, more reliable, less heat, and last longer.

And if you want to overclock it, you can get 1Ghz overclock with just air cooling with a P4. Amd's usually get aroung 300-500Mhz faster after unlocking it.

And the new Hyper-Threading Pentiums are great also.

on the other hand at stock speeds an xp 2000, is a match for any p4 on the market and if you got a xp2700, just mint, i have used rempeg2 on a p4 clocked to 2.9ghz doing the matrix took 8 hours, yet with my xp2000 it took 6 hours, the P4 had more memory as well
