I have had quite a bit of trouble making backups of dvd9 disks, even using the so-called idiots guides...

Basically i have the following software which i can use reasonably:

DVD Decrypter
TMPGEnc Plus
Am now downloading chapter extractor

Basically this is what I want from my backups....

Just the movie
5.1 Surround
English Subs
Chapters

Not bothered about extras, menus etc.

Are there any guides that say what to do with the output from TMPGEnc?
Also, what programs are good for authoring and where can I find them? They need to be able to insert the chapter info extracted from Chapter Xtractor....

Can anyone help?
Cheers,
Michael

IFoedit is the easiest way to do that. The authoring dialog allows you to insert the chapter points from the chapterXtractor file, audio delay, and subs. You just need the m2v and ac3 and you are all set. It then creates the files for you to burn. There is no menu option at this point, so this is fine for what you want. rishardc's guide will walk you through the process with a flash video. http://www.cdrom-guide.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23860

when i created the .m2v file using tmpg for later use i did not use the settings given from IFOedit...
Could this be why im having trouble? dont really want to encode again if this is irrelevant

Cheers,
Michael

I haven't had that problem myself. I guess I've made 5 or 6 backups with that method.

Normally, though, I use SpruceUp, and set my own chapter points. I think Maestro lets you use the info from ChapterXtractor, and do subs, but don't quote me on that, because I don't desire them.

As far as the guides, and not understanding them too well, rishardc's guides at the top of this forum are quite good, and he has flash movies demonstrating a lot of the process. You might check that out. Once you have done this once or twice, you'll wonder what the fuss was all about.

if u use DVD Decrypter you can set it to extract a chapter file , which then can be used in maestro...dead easy
CyBeRkId2002 i use dvd2svcd all the time .. I have backed up over 20 dvd's using this method but instead of using tmpge i use cinema craft encoder which is a far superior program.
All the film's i have made are 100 percent in quality hope this helps

when using IFOedit to output a TMPG template it asks me whether i want I, B or P frames or something like that, which do i need to select?
Also, following this bit it also comes up with a long list of combinations of these letters, which do I need to select?

bigsyd--> can the chapter file from DVD Decrypter be used in SpruceUp?
dont have DVD Maestro and cant find it any where...

Thanks alot,
Michael

I is interlaced
P is Progressive

Check the source with bitrate viewer if you are not sure.

Not sure about B

With Spruceup, you can manually enter the times from the ChapterXtractor text file, or look them up like this.....
http://www.blockbuster.com/bb/dvd/details/0,7295,DVD-E+31803,00.html?

Use a time calculator for adding them up
http://download.com.com/3000-2053-8436381.html?tag=lst-0-1

And CCE really is the way to encode.........

I is not interlaced, P is not Progressive, well I guess it could be, but not in this case.

I is Intrapicture, P is Predictedpicture and B is Bidirectionalpredictedpicture.

I, P and to some extent B frames are common to all mpeg based video compression.. MPEG1, 2 and 4.

I stand corrected. With a small amount of research, I found I had been mistaken and that.....

I picture This is independent picture which completes compression inside frame. The frame data can be played independently.
P picture This refers to previous I, P picture to extract difference, then compressed The compression is higher than I picture.
B picture This refers to both previous and next I, P picture to extract difference, then compressed The compression is higher than P picture.

That is taken from the TMPGEnc Faq.

I can't even remember where I got the bogus info to begin with, but I never verified it. Thanks c_d. You ARE the everlasting know-it-all yoda of this board

sorry, just to ask again one final time, which of these do i need to tick? only I and P?
After this which of the combinations of the letters do i need to select?

If this is different for all movies? if so which program do i use (and how) to find out the settings i need?

Really stuck and am relying on you guys to help me make a quality backup.

thanks for all your help so far, id have gone insane without it!

please can someone help me on this last step, its getting me very frustrated!
I have sorted out menus etc. and am ready to encode the movie. Just need to know what settings to use on the tmpg template section. First of all I have a choice of I, P, B.... what do i choose? Secondly a combination of letters appears, which one do i need to select. as soon as i have this i think i should be able to create my first decent backup. Thanks for all your time spent replying,

Cheers
Michael :) :) :) :)

Sorry, forgot to add....
when i did try a couple of settings the number of frames ifoedit was creating was around 10 over the actual length of the movie. dont know if this is relevant and if i have to get rid of this in some way?
