Pioneer Japan has just posted a new firmware for A05/105, ver 1.21

The link to PioJP is:
hxxp://wwwbsc.pioneer.co.jp/product-e/ibs/device_e/dev00001r_e.html

It does NOT allow downgrading once installed, though.

It sports the "standard" improvement notices saying nothing in particular:
DVD-R/RW Writability Improvement
DVD-R/RW Playability Improvement
CD-R/RW Writability Improvement
CD-R/RW Playability Improvement

plus one specific one:
Support 2X writing on New Prodisc DVD-R Media

Hmmmm, think I'll hold off a bit before upgrading mine, only had it about 2 weeks, but everything up to now has burnt 100%, though only at x1 though, still no rush, & at least the burn is reliable, I wont risk upgrading with this, just incase it turns out to be worse than the version it's replacing, being stuck with it until the next firmware upgrade would be annoying to say the least.

can't win, everybody waits for the new firmware to fix things and then when it comes out no one wants to risk installing it, that includes me, as i am too poor to buy a new one

I have a DVR-105 and updated the firmware. Seems ok though I have only burned 3 or 4 movies, all at 1 speed. Am I right in thinking this writer supports 4x burning? I have been offered 4x media and was wondering if it is worth it.

Personally if I had an A05, I would be waiting for some hacked firmware. Who knows maybe they will figure out a way to allow you to burn 4x on any disk (but I doubt this). At least 2x would be nice.
