Yes I did post a similar question before, but it was left unanswered, and now my DVD Recorder is up and running.

I have high quality version of Star Wars Trilogy DivX. They are in 16:9 format. I need to edit the avi, to make it 4:3 video, but it has to have 16:9 video with black bars.
I know I've done this with TMPGEnc, changing it to an MPEG which is ok, but too much quality was lost.

(I wasnt sure whether this was even the right forum, but it's going on a DVDr, so I fiured, this would work, plus you guys seem to know the most)

You want to make it 4:3, but it has to be 16:9?? So you want to make it 4:3, but without cropping the sides?? Wouldn't it be easier just to leave it 16:9 then let the player handle that.

Also I think you will find that AVI's are generally in 1:1 format. DivX doesn't have an aspect ratio flag. XviD will soon though.

If you were to resize a 640x272 AVI to 720x326 then add borders to fill to 720x576 then that would give you the correct aspect ratio when played back at 4:3 (I think??). For 16:9 you would resize to 720x436 then again add borders to 720x576.

Of course if you are dealing with NTSC then the above values are wrong.
