i'm so pissed off with my magic 3 chip. it took me 2 days to install it and several trips to hardware shops. Now when ive finally got it sorted i'm left with it only playing half of my cdrs all top quality and it wont play a single dvdr tried adjusting my laser, got a flooky boot once but now all it does is click. All i know for sure is i was happier 2 days ago with my old neo 2 chip. i'm now left with the question of either buying a messiah 2. so i can replace the smelly magic chip or buying a new laser, not sure which one will work best? just out of curiosity what resistance do people find most effective fo the pots?

It could be either. Did DVD-rs play with you Neo2, if so, its not the laser, get the Messiah2 then.

they did play. b4 i fiddled with the pots it sounded like it was at least making an effort to try to load the dvdr until it went silent now all it does is click. Also it seems as if the top is coming off the potentiometer a little bit. will this make a difference. could i screw the laser in just one attempt at changing the resistance?

Dvd pots should not be messed with. You might as well get a new laser now.

well you did mess it up by changing the pots, yep new laser needed now, did you check your install over to see if it was that.

Well now you need to go ahead and get a new laser also, and a Messiah2 if you want. You should NEVER fool around with the DVD pot, only the CD pot if it is giving you trouble.

It doesn't matter now anyway i broke it completley let the dvd drive fall onto the main board now nothing spins. i realise its my inpatient fault, but if the damn thing when i installed the magic 3 had just worked, like i suspect it would have with a messiah 2 then i wouldnt have gone fiddiling. Now i'm going to have to work some more days to buy a new one and if i fail my degree, through handing inj work late, get a **** job and die a lonely hermit, i want it written on my gravestone "i blame magic 3."

I was initially a little disappointed with the Magic 3, PS2 games didn't seem to boot reliably, and today I found original DVD's wouldn't boot. I don't think it's a bad chip, just has some quirkes. After figuring out to double tap the reset when loading a PS2 DVDR works every time and now recently to hold reset until the blue light comes on to boot a dvd movie, I have no quames.

I am very happy now.

Although the installation is difficult, (A 20 year electronic repair veteran from work installed mine, he worked on a navy submarine and had to be trained to repair boards from scratch, he does miraculous work :) ) the 40$ was well worth it.

PS. Magic 3 didn't ruin your x-mas, a novice trying an expert install did.

There is nothing wrong with the magic 3. I have installed one in a ver 7 and its great. Most probs are down to the lenght of the 4 wires:-
Ground
+5v
Reset
Z

Provided you keep these 4 wries as SHORT as possible and also use thicker wire - you are sorted. aqlso, on the other side of the board, cover your connections with insulating tap - they can short out on the metal casing.

Its doing my head in that everyone slags off the magic 3 when its usually down to people NOT KNOWING how to operate the damn thing. I used to install neo4 chips and the magic 3 is a dream by comparison. I am a fan as you can see of the magic 3 chip so we should here some more good points about it.

Looking through the forum i dont see many complaints about messiah chips, magic 3 may work a treat on some ps2's but obviously not on all older versions like my version 3, which would b4 i broke it impatiently have needed a new laser to get the chip to work. Also i realise the chip i recieved from kanection was a green clone even though i paid the full amount for it and it had a blue chip on their website. This could have added to it not working properly. Even so the fans of magic 3 must be able to admit that it does seem less reliable in comparison to messiah chips, for a minimum extra premium.
