Sounds like some sort of hardware conflict problem or Linux possibly accesses the IRQs or memory a different way to windows. Also have you tried reloading the BIOS?

The first problem is that it is a Compaq.....windows that is loaded is always a compaq specific disk......hence probelems...if you don't get the drivers from compaq you have to got to the source and I believe it is a swiss company....who will not supply drivers to individuals, only the businesses they are contracted to...(my mate has tried)..you contact them and they say you cannot get them there.... try the supplier...hence a viscious circle..the same story goes for bios updates......not a very friendly sort of machine

I'm just swaggin' it here (stupid wild a## guess) but have you tried different memory ? If you have a flaky memory module it might work OK under Linux but not Windows because of the difference in how they manage memory. Like I said it's just a shot in the dark but I've heard of bad memory doing some wild things and random freeze ups is at the top of the list. At the very least pull the memory and check for corrosion on the pins.
