Use a hex editor and delete/replace random chunks, that should do the trick.

Take a random .exe file or something and rename it to .doc. Word will not be able to display the file and if it happens to display something it would be garbage characters.

Changing/deleting with a hex editor will give a much more believable corrupt word document as it would really be a corrupt word document.

Also if you rename an EXE then the doc will contain a message about how it must be run under windows (assuming it is a windows EXE of course).

why would that corupt it??

and i dont have xp which i think is what you need to use open with, on a file that already has a program to run it

You could just make a new .DOC file and mash randomly on the keyboard for a few minutes to fill it up with random character and throw a few legitimate words in there to make it look real.

People seem to be making this alot harder then it really is.... Seems to me all you're really looking for is a .DOC file that looks real but isn't.

i quite agree ive done what i wanted now so thanks to everyone who offered input

i needed it to fool a person who dosent know much about pcs and i think i have done that

if it had an error message on startup he wouldnt understand it, so he had to see the actual document mucked up a bit which i have done

You could let a MS Office worm/virus on it...that would corrupt it for sure...I used to get a really common worm a lot, but thankfully, Norton killed it everytime.

here's a simple corruption look... Highlight all the text and change the font type to MSoutlook in the font editor

Querty's idea would not corrupt the original document as its not an exe file to begin with its a .doc file, unless I've miss understood and you just wanted any old file to look like it had a word document extension file name?

you could also use a simple file protector that would encode the full text to look like garbage unless you had an unlock code

Why are people still beating this to death? Dave already got what he wanted...
