Usually, everything goes smoothly.
In my personal experience, if you're careful, you'll probably not get ripped. Just take a good look at the seller's feedback. And if the deal is too good to be true, don't bid.

as gambit said, carefully review the seller's feedback. When buying used items, particularly look for feedback that says things like "not as described" or "item had x damage that wasn't mentioned ..." Occasionally, you may even find those comments in positive feedback (less important to some i guess if the price is right), so read carefully and all should go well. :)

have to agree with the posts above sellers feedback is everything on ebay if they dont have any feedback then tread carefully or just avoid the item regardless of the bargain that it appears to be.I have bought lots of items from ebay from cds to the car that i drive and have even had items of considerable value sent from america, all of the people i have dealt with have been excellent with the one exception of a chap who had zero feedback and ripped me on a tool sale this was down to my own bargain hunting greed more than anything else and has not put me off what is an excellent use of the web

I buy a lot from ebay and I haven't got ripped once. The key thing is communication, rating and feedback.
Another good auction site to go to is http://www.ubid.com

I have bought and sold many things on ebay, the feedback idea is fantastic because you can see if the seller is reliable or not. I have also had bidders who do not pay at the end of the auction, the seller ends up paying the ebay fees and re-listing fees. If you leave bad feedback about a bad buyer they then leave a made -up bad feedback about you. Generally most ebayers are reliable, I have purchased many things from America and always received them.
