I have just been offered a Sony DVD Writer unused still in box 2 months old for £150. I don't know the model but there can't be that many about. I was just wondering if it is a good deal.

If it is the sony dru110a I have a simple peice of advice DON'T DO IT. It only supports DVD+RW and not DVD+R or DVD-R/-RW. The rewritable discs both DVD+RW and DVD-RW have the lowest compatibility of any formats and have the most expensive media. If it is the sony dru120a (which judging by your 2 months old date it probably is) then it supports DVD+R/+RW. but not DVD-R or -RW. Most on here will argue that the DVD-R format has the highest compatibility. If you are a gamer and interested in playing both videogame backups and DVD movie backups on either PS2 or XBOX, DVD-R is the clear winner as few people have had success with DVD+R on anything but the latest versions of these units and these will still play DVD-R. I just noticed that you are in england and if that is the case I will definitely tell you not to buy that sony (not unless by some miraculous chance it is the new sony dru500a which supports both + and - formats but judging by the price tag it is probably not) and get one of the Pioneer -R/-RW drives as they are among the best and although they might not have the 150 pound price, they aren't too much more and the media for -R is much more available in england then the +R not to mention much less expensive. Hope this helps |
