Come on then, which is the best, XBox or PS2?

Which is the easiest to get chipped?

Can either of them work with one of those boot disk thingys? (Can you tell that I don't know much about these consoles!!?)

xbox is easiest to chip w/o question, i personaly prefer xbox as a games console too, but it can do much much more than just play games eg. avi/mpeg player and emulators etc!

What is the best way of playing 'back-up' disks on the XBox.

Would appreciate any emails with as much info as possible.

Cheers

search the xbox forum for all ur question there should be more then enough info there to make ur mind up!

btw if u chip ur xbox it allows the running of unsigned code (the xbox copy protection) in other words it'll play backups!

here is a little quote from mister fulldown over here...

"lol, i like xbox and then i got banned........ :D"

I would choose PS2...... has many more games than x-box....... becuz guess what...... psone has the most ever games but x-box can't played psone games....... lol :D....

you can get a premodded console here: www.psx-tech.com which is only 50 dollar more than the x-box premodded..... but note: you get what you pay for, so the more you pay..... then the better you will get.......

lol, why would you want a game console for only playing emulators and avi files...... that is just the same as a computer then........ lol :D

Obviously saying "I Like Xbox" is a bannable offence!!

xbox is going to be much better than the ps2 especially when more games start to come out. If you get the matrix mod chip for the xbox it takes 5 min to install and you don't need any experience to install it.:)

Jan 11, 2003, 02:47 AM
So, apart from the fact that I wouldn’t be able to play my PS1 games, the general consensus is that the Xbox with the Matrix chip is the best bet?

How much is the Matrix chip gonna set me back?

thisiscoo
Jan 11, 2003, 06:34 AM
the matrix is a no solder modchips and it cost around 59 dollars......

well, not really, becuz if you're a fan of those RPG games, or DMC/Tekken games..... then you will be missing them a lot...... :D

but if you don't like those games.... then i guess x-box is your best bet the.....

There is something to consider before you jump on the xbox wagon. What kind of games do you like to play. So far after a year the only game most people talk about for the xbox is halo (which came out over a year ago). I have heard some good stuff about the Tom Clancy games but all but 1 are made for the PS2 as well. If you are into fantasy role players xbox is a worthless POS. Alot of people really like GTA Vice City which probably will never make it to xbox. Xbox has some good combat strategy games and sports games and technically has superior stats to PS2. It seems to me though that the xbox has been out for more than a year and people are still waiting for good games for the system. You will notice many people talk about the specs but not many run off a list of 5 games or more that are incredible. What good is a system that has impressive specs and capablities but doesn't have the games to back it up. This has convinced many people I know to buy a PS2 because they are tired of waiting for xbox to get it's act together and produce a good library of games and not just a select few. Which ever way you go you might want to wait as both PS2 and Xbox have rumored price cuts on the way this year.

A common misconception. That's like saying the only game people talk about on PS2 is GTA3/GTA VC. Just because it's the BEST game on the system doesn't mean it's the only game anyone talks about.

If you are into fantasy role players xbox is a worthless POS.

Just because they don't have Final Fantasy games doesn't mean their upcoming RPGs are going to suck. Frankly, some have the potential to be better (Star Wars KOTOR and Galaxies, Fable, True Fantasy Live).

Alot of people really like GTA Vice City which probably will never make it to xbox.

No argument there, Sony made a smart move by locking down GTA until 2004. Regardless, GTA 3 knockoffs are in full-swing now, and someone is likely going to do it "better" at some point. True Crime looks pretty decent so far, and that will be on XBox.

It seems to me though that the xbox has been out for more than a year and people are still waiting for good games for the system.

I don't understand these people. The system has plenty of good games...sure, not ALL of them are exclusive, but so what? Just glancing to my shelf right now, I see Halo, NFL2k3, MGS2 Substance, MK Deadly Alliance, Mechassault, SSX Tricky, Jet Set Radio Future, Rallisport Challenge, THPS4...those are all good (or great) games, and that's not even my entire collection.

What good is a system that has impressive specs and capablities but doesn't have the games to back it up.

See above.

Which ever way you go you might want to wait as both PS2 and Xbox have rumored price cuts on the way this year.

Damn right. I'm still pissed I bought an XBox at launch. Thank god I didn't buy a PS2 and GC at launch as well.

It depends on what type of games you want, if you like many types of games, get a PS2, it has a bright future. DMC2 should be out on the 15th, try take a look at that game. For GTA theres GTA4, and GTA Sin City comming, for Final Fantasy theres 11, 12, 10-2, and possible a 7 remake and a 7-2, XenoSaga is aslo good.

www.gamespot.com has all the games for each system.

X-box is doing ok, Halo2 will be out at the end of this year.

Most PPL do talk about the specs and graphics, but if you want that, just play PC games. X-box just has poor support for games, but some good titles, but not enough for my taste.

I'm glad I posted this, I've gotten more information than I would've done reading a magazine.

I prefer games like Metal Gear Solid and Hitman etc and the Mrs likes games like Spyro the Dragon and Crash Bandicoot etc.

I think it's gonna come down to whoever brings down the price the most this year (as was suggested by jesterrace777) and who's gonna throw in the most stuff for the price (memory card, dvd remote etc)

Thank you all for your posts so far, I'll still be interested if anybody else has any input.

Cheers

So what is the conclusion? I have just purchased two 6” TFT screens for the car and now I would like to be able to play games and watch DVDs.

So the question is what is best – X-Box or PS2 (and why?) and should it be chipped (which chip?).

I will await the debate

BTW, I have three kids (15,13 and 8) this may affect your view!!

xbox is better bye far

jesterrace777

as for questions regaurding chips and should it be chipped it all depends whether or not you want your system to be able to read backups of games, and how knowledgeable you are about putting one in (or someone you trust knowing how to put one in). If you aren't comfortable with using a soldering iron on a videogame system then I will simply say "DON"T DO IT". They do have pug and play modchips but these require either a gameshark or action replay and you have to do a swap (I'm personally waiting for one that requires either little or no soldering and no swap). As far as to which system you should get it all depends on what kind of games your kids are into. I would say that PS2 has the best diversity (and unarguably the biggest library) for people of all ages. Xbox's games are geared almost completely for teens and adults (which doesn't mean that PS2 can't keep up in this area). The other thing to consider is that to watch movies xbox requires the purchase of a $30 remote to play dvds whereas the PS2 will do it right out of the box. If you have old Playstation 1 favorites the PS2 will play them and the Xbox will not. The xbox is bulkier and would take up more space in your vehicle. PS2 contains such titles as Jax Daxter, Final Fantasy X, Gran Turismo 3, Metal Gear Solid 2, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (this might be a little out the league of your kids due to content), Tokyo Extreme Racer Zero, Extreme G Racing. Xbox contains such titles as Halo, Dead or Alive 3, Jet Set Radio Future, Sega Gt2002, Blood Wake. These are only a few that I could think of off the top of my head and the games I have listed for both systems are ones that are unique to that system. You might want to go to the store and take a look at these games and thier description or go to the websites www.xbox.com or www.Playstation.com for available titles and descriptions or upcomming titles and descriptions. I hope this helps you achesney. I hope like me you choose a PS2 but you must weigh the information given to you and decide for yourself. I hope this helps more than "xbox is better bye far"

Wow!

It would appear so far that this is not so clear-cut!

Any other definitive advice would be appreciated.

First, I should point out that I've had both. I had a PS2 for over a year. I now have an XBox (I've had it for ~ one month).

The PS2 has more titles, there is no doubt about it. And amongst those titles, there are a few great games (not as many as people might suggest though!). For a family console, the PS2 is hard to beat - it is the best all-rounder.

Personally, I felt I'd outgrown the PS2 - The Getaway was, for me, a huge disappointment - I'm an adult and I wanted more.

It is perhaps ironic that it's the multi platform games - the XBox versions of which are more often than not the best - that are holding the XBox back. They are designed for all three consoles and rarely take advantage of the superior capabilities of the XBox. Make no mistake, developers will start to make use of these capabilities and the XBox will move towards a PC standard of gaming, leaving the other consoles behind. Games like HALO and other 'Only on XBox' titles are evidence of this.

I used to think the XBox was too big and ugly. It's not. I hated the XBox. Now I appreciate it immensely. I was a non-believer, but now I have seen the light

I thought I'd miss Pro Evolution Soccer 2. In fact, FIFA 2003 on the XBox is better. And I thought I couldn't live without Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. Well, I'm managing! In fact I'm grateful for the experience of playing HALO, Splinter Cell, MotoGP, RalliSport Challenge, etc, etc.

(HALO is without doubt the best game I have ever played).

Incidentally, people moan about having to buy a DVD kit for the XBox. On the PS2, you can't watch your DVD movies in RGB - ever! The DVD played on the XBox is better by far. (And in any event, you face an equivalent expense for the PS2; what's the point in playing games without a memory card?).

Finally, there's the whole 'backup' scene. This really does set the XBox apart:

I turn on my XBox, and there's a menu. (I customized the menu and the background picture is my own work - I have several 'skins' I can use; the background I can see now is two Madden 2003 screenshots faded into each other... a good effort, even if I do say so myself). The first item on the menu is 'Gamez'. I highlight it and press the A button and voila: a list of games stored on my upgraded XBox HDD, all READY TO RUN.

The PS2 can't come close to that.

From PS2 to XBox - and I am so glad I did.

(Obviously, I'm an adult and you're a family, so not all of the above will be relevant considerations for you :))

Dear Fellow Members

I think the X-Box has it.

Now where do I buy? And what Mod do I get?

Can anyone help out here?

gloriousglenn
Jan 15, 2003, 05:23 PM
The XBox seems to have it, however I have a lot of PS1 backups (I have no idea where the originals are!!). But I suppose I can always keep my PS1 to hand for those disks.

For jesterrace777: You mentioned that you are waiting for a mod that requires either little or no soldering and no swap. How close do you think we are to seeing these? It's either that or trusting someone to do it and risking my warranty.

Cheers

If you're in the UK, I suggest you buy a premodded console (xecutor2 chip). I got mine from a guy on the ********** forum - northernmonkey - picked it up myself. Top quality job and he guarantees his work. His website is www.premodded.co.uk

Check out the ********** forum too.

Nice one 49er, that's the sort of thing I'm looking for. A modded box that is guatenteed. Cheers m8.

It is possible to buy premodded consoles from a few places. Keep in mind that this is going to cost you no matter what system you get. The place I keep checking on is www.videogameaccessories.com. Some people can probably list some other places to get these as well and should list them. For 49er I was just curious how many games can you store on the xbox harddrive and is it possible to store the bootup data on the harddrive and using your harddrive as a sort of boot disc (no swap) to play backups.

xbox seems to be more versatile(plays every/anything, runs os, media players etc.), durable, the games seem to be higher in quality (less crappy rubber stamp games).
the graphics, gameplay, and controller seem as good or better than ps2.

the ps2 console is junk. get an extended warranty and pray. gta3 and vice city are killer apps worth playing, but get awefully boring and tedious. the novelty wears thin.

ms needed to make something that raised the bar. xbox does this both by design and inadvertently.

And the debate continues...

jesterrace777 - You've probably know by now, but I upgraded my xbox hdd to 80gb, so I have plenty of storage! And Xbox chips are no-swap, so no worries playing backups.

I would like to add that I now use the smaller M$ Controller S, which I prefer to the chunky controller supplied with the Xbox. Well worth a look!

Yeah, I sold out a bit and bought an XBOX myself. BUT I STILL HAVE MY PS2 AND WON'T GET RID OF IT. By the way, thanks for mentioning the fact that making your own backups is a pain in the arse. Don't get me wrong I got a sweet deal on a used xbox and I don't regret getting someone to install an X2 Lite for me but after everyone went off on how easy it was to mod it no one mentioned the process of backing up originals was a lot different then just popping a disc into your dvd burner having it read it to the harddrive and then writing it back to a dvd-r. The process involved requires you to download evolution x to your xbox via internet connection (and for legal reasons no one can tell you where to get this program). You then have to use your xbox to read the original xbox disc to the harddrive and then FTP and then burn it to a DVD-R disc. All I am saying is that whenever people go off and say the xbox is better because it is easier to mod they need to mention the fact that if you are planning on backing up your own originals that there is more to it then a simple read and burn. Now that I own both systems I still am partial to my PS2 for games. I love both of my systems but I am still a little biased toward my PS2 as with the XBOX I am still struggling to find games that interest me (this seems to be a problem with some xbox fans over at xbox-scene as well). I love DOA3, DOA Volleyball was so-so, and Totaled is decent (Though my favorite Demolition Derby game of all time for gameplay is definitely Destruction Derby RAW for the PS1 since it had so many different modes and options), I am awaiting the release of Midtown Madness 3 although I am a bit dissapointed that there are only two cities to play in. Oh well final verdict for me is that both systems are great but I still like my PS2 a little bit more for the number of games with good gameplay.
