Sorry if this has been asked before but thinking of buying a dvd writer, can i 'backup' xbox games just like i normally would for a ps one game, ie. game disk in one rom blank in other straight copy??

You can't straight copy like that. You needs to download the games to your computer first and than burn it to a dvd-r. I think if you get a right modchip, you can copy the orginal games striaght to your xbox HD.

Yes, it can be copied straight on the PC, but if it was burned using GDFImage/xiso, Explorer will not see the content, it will see it as an invalid disc.

You have to read it using iso reader.
