I was reading around, I do not remember where and I saw something about making a cable modem go faster. The process was called uncapping a cable modem. And I was wandering if this really works and how to do it, also if there are any downsides, then please LMK.
Please help me.
Thanks, mitchkil5@yahoo.com

I think this process only worked on older cable modems (could be wrong), as ISP's caught onto people doing it and gave them modem's which couldn't be tampered with and thus couldn't be uncapped.

DOWNSIDE:
---------------
If you uncap your cable connection, and your ISP finds out, they can kick you off for good or even sue you :)

wont work, your speed is in their control, not yours

You can't uncap your modem. The best that you can do is tweak your registry to allow faster downloads. It will enlarge the window in which you receive downloads. It doesn't effect upload speed though. You can edit the registry manually. However it is much easier just to use a program to do it for you. DRTCP (http://www.dslreports.com/faq/578) There are also instructions there to explain what the settings should be.

Hi

take alook at this as it may put you off the idea of 'uncapping'

Yeah, you can't do it now (well, it won't do anything for you except get you maybe a little sentence for theft from your ISP), but if you visit www.speedguide.net and have a general look around, and select the "patches", you will find all sorts of automated tweaking tools - I have used some of them with very good results for my cable..

it is possible to {quote}uncap{/unquote} your modem.
when the modem powers on it connects to your providers computer and downloads the config file that stipulates what its max up/down stream speed is aswell as some other parameters.
with old cable modems it was possible to setup a server on your comp with a manually manipulated config file and force the cable modem to connect to your server to download that file.
unfortunately i'm not getting anymore specific then that as it is theft of service and if caught doing it you will get kicked off you provider and possibly taken to court.

Well, I guess uncapping is a pretty bad idea. But is there any ways to increase the D/l speed in WinXP and how much will they increase?
BTW, thanks Elaine, I will do that when I get cable.

www.dslreports.com has a speed test and also will check your configuration to ensure that you have the correct settings. It does help quite a bit.

Actually the link to DrTCP is located at dslreports.com. It's a great site full of useful information. Thanks, putergeke. :)
It depends upon your specific situation, however, I've personally found that tweaking the registry to provide much more speed than I thought it would. Of course it may be possible to uncap your cable modem. However I refuse to give out information that will only get members' service terminated and perhaps likely get them arrested.

OK, so what I will have to do is get the DRTCP proggy, then go to broadbandreports.com and test out my internet connection speed, then enter the information that they give me in the DRTCP and that will edit my registry?
Please tell me if this is correct.
Also, I am going to be getting a [advertised] 768Kb/s (96KB/s) download speed and I am in WinXP, and can anyone give me an approximate increase on speed?
Thanks for any help.

I would suggest not doing it. There have been lawsuits and theft charges filed against people who have done it in the past.

Hey, I said I wasn't going to do it. I don't need a bunch of people telling me not to do it after I have decided not to!!!
But besides that, in DRTCP, I find the settings from DSLReports.com in the tools section, then I enter them into DRTCP and that edits my registry? If that is not how, then please tell me how it would work.
And please tell me if there are any other ways of increasing the DL speed without getting busted.
Also please tell me approximately the registry edit with DRTCP will help my DL speed. I am going to get a package advertised at 768Kb/s (96KB/s).
Thanks
