I have been trying (in vain!) to connect to the internet on a computer that has just been added to a LAN in an office. This LAN has all Windows 2000 machines and there are 8 PCs including mine. My IP address starts with 169.254 where as everyone elses starts 192.168 also my subnet mask is 255.255.0.0 whereas on the working machines itīs 255.255.255.0

I can access every computer through Network Neighbourhood but when i try and ping their addresses i get 100% packet loss! The only other computer than my own that i can successfully ping is the server.

Can anyone suggest any way to resolve this?

Cheers

Is your IP set as 'obtain IP address automactically' ?

yes, and also the DNS is set to obtain automatically.

:bouncing:bumpety bump:bouncing:

PS: I have forced my IP address and now i can ping the server and every other computer and get a response but still canīt get on the net from my machine. I have checked the DHCP settings and my forced IP is within that range and is not conflicting with any of the others. Iīve tried removing all protocols but still no luck :(

sorry to bring an old topic back but i just sorted it out. It appears that it was Mcafee, I uninstalleed it restarted and everything was fine. Hope that might help someone else (i have since re-installed Mcafee with no probs)
