is it really a mini DVD? or something related to the DVD format? I heard the capacity is only 1.5 GB? Is this true? If it is then it disappointing compared to PS2/XBOX full-size DVD capacities. It makes GameCubes feels like a Nintendo64 with little space on the game. Does this also means there are much less CGI movies on GameCube games than on PS2/XBOX?

digicube, is the maximum capacity of the media the thing you judge video game quality with? Do you automatically think a game is no good because the disc is smaller? CGI movies alone do not make a good game.

It does not mean that the games have much less CGI movies. Most PS2 and Xbox games do not even use close to the whole DVD. (thats why most games can be ripped releativly easily) Also because game are in a on a cheap format you can easily and cheaply put more cgi movies into the games by adding another disc or two. This is unlike n64 where adding another cartrigde would raise the price another $15 or so.

Same size (physically) as mini cdr. I would say that blank mini dvd's are to come in the future. With the modem and broadband adapters out, chips are only as far away as the mini dvd blanks

It won't be long now till Gamecube is hacked.

As far as I know they are not mini dvds because Nintendo said the reason the price of the Gamecube is so cheap is that no dvd components were needed which saved alot of money.
I read that the disc is similar to dvd but not exactly the same, it is their own creation.

well alot of the gamecube magazines give out disks with video previews to use on the gamecube, but they can also be watched on ps2 xbox etc.

I havent seen any preview discs mate, only discs I have seen make you think it is the size of a gamecube disc but if you take it out it is a full size dvd which will only play in a dvd player or a PS2/XBox

They are mini-dvd's...the reason Nintendo doesn't have to pay the dvd commitee the extra $10 per system is because the Gamecube doesn't play dvd movies. That's why you don't see the "DVD-ROM" or "DVD-Video" insignias on the GC...it was never meant to play them. Basically, if it don't play the movies, you don't have to pay the commitee...even if it is DVD media.

If they were normal mini dvds then they would be easy to copy, but they are not, it took Datel over 6 months to get Freeloader pressed off because there was no other way than have Nintendo do it for them, the media is there own special type, its been explained before that they are not just normal mini dvds.

I think if it were that easy Sony wouldn't be using normal CD/DVD media.

I'd bet the data layer on the GC discs is dvd format but they have some extra compression/security measures to throw ppl off. In time I'm sure we'll see some method of backup.
