RZA Jan 16, 2003, 06:39 AM Hi
I've been experiencing soem problems on my pc for a while, and i still get teh same problems after formatting and reinstallig etc
I am using Windows 2000 Pro, with service pack 3 installed
I am also using Via4in1 drivers v4.38
Hardware:
Athlon 1.2 ghz
Geforce 3 ti200
512MB SD Ram PC133
Seagate 60 GB Hard Disk
Liteon 24x CDRW
Pioneer 16x DVD ROM
Sound card, USB2 card
300W PSU
The problems are freezing, occasional rebooting and blue screens. he mos common blue screen is 'Beginning Dump Of Physical Memory' and seems to happen when i'm burning cds
Generally i have these problems at random imes, usually when i'm burning cds, copying stuff from my external hard disk, and even jus when i'm using Word etc.
I did have a 512 MB Ram Dimm and a 256 MB Ram Dimm, i tryed taking each out but it didn't really help
I have checked my bios and used Moherboard Monitor 5, and all the temperatures seem to be fine :
Processor Idle - 28 degrees c
Processor Busy - 41 degrees c
Avg System Temp - 34 degrees c
Another temp (dunno what) - 30 degrees c
Any ideas what the problem could be?????? Could it be my PSU, or shoudl 300W be enough for my system?
Thanks
RZA
RZA Jan 16, 2003, 08:45 AM btw it also freezes in xp, but i never got any blue screens in xp, but i dont wanna go back to xp.
any ideas if it may help getting the latest via 4in 1 drivers (4.45 i think) - are these better tha my current 4.38 or not?
ps2wiz Jan 16, 2003, 04:47 PM Try to update your drivers...?
QWERTY Jan 17, 2003, 12:35 AM Have you checked the event viewer logs? They'll usually tell you specifically what errors are occuring.
RZA Jan 17, 2003, 05:44 AM ps2wiz01 - as far as i know i am using the best drivers for what hardware i have - nvidia 40.72's and via4in1's 4.38, and the lastest drivers for my sound card
anyone know if via4in1's 4.45 are good?
QWERTY - how do i check the event viewer logs?
thanks for your help
Captain Jan 17, 2003, 06:13 AM Try searching this board for rebooting and xp as there have been quite a few similar threads on here in the past couple of weeks. I've posted suggestions to a few of them which you might find useful.
RZA Jan 17, 2003, 06:17 AM i;m using win2kpro tho, not xp - but i'll have a search anyway - thanks
how do i check the event viewer logs?
Captain Jan 17, 2003, 06:53 AM Its under adminstrator options, you might have to add it to the start menu or find it in help or control panel somewhere.
RZA Jan 17, 2003, 10:51 AM thanks
right - my event viewer has says, under system log -
lots of errors and warnings for cdrom and atapi
what do i do now?
thanks
RZA Jan 17, 2003, 11:00 AM right - when i rigth click on eh error or warning and click properties his is what i get:
warning for cdrom-
an error was detected on device \Device\CdRom0 during paging operaion
error for atapi -
the device, \Device\Ide\IdePort1 did not respond within the timeout period
as they mention cdrom's and ide i thought this may be useful - how my drives are connected up
Primary Master - 60 gig HD
Secondary Master - DVDRom
Secondary Slave - CDRW
i'm pretty sure the dvd and CDRW are that way round anyway
Captain Jan 17, 2003, 01:31 PM Not sure, wouldn't have though CD or DVD drives would cause the system to reboot. Have you tried disabling autoreboot (if you can in 2k) like I suggested in another thread?
RZA Jan 18, 2003, 08:23 AM although i said i get rebooting, it happens rarely - the main problems are freezing - which happens randomly and quite often, and the blue screens during cd burning which is annoying cos it means i'm wasting so many cdr's
i have updated to via4in1 4.45 to see it that helps, it has frozen since but i haven' had any blue screens during cd burning yet.
i'll let you know if that helps, but anymore ideas bout the freezing?
TheCaptain2k1 - i saw your reply about disablign autoboot with XP, just wondering what happens if it doesn' reboot - surely i mus reboot for a reason?
thanks for your help
Captain Jan 18, 2003, 08:33 AM Not sure what happens if it doesn't reboot. Since I turned autoreboot off it hasnt frooze, blue screened or rebooted so its hard to tell. Maybe I've just been lucky.
RZA Jan 18, 2003, 09:42 AM ok i unchecked auto reboot in system and recovery, and autoreboot was already set to zero in the registry
i think i read somewhere it may help if dma is enabled on drives - shoudl i do this on both my cdrw and dvd rom?
RZA Jan 18, 2003, 10:54 AM i jus tryed to burn a cd and unforunately i got the blue screen again, this time i wrote down what it said:
*** STOP: 0x0000001E (0xC0000005, 0xA0013A32, 0x00000000, 0xA02AFFF4)
KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
*** Address A0013A32 base at A0000000, Datestamp 3cdb4145 - win32k.sys
Beginning dump of physical memory
Dump of physical memory complete. Please contact your system administrator (etc)
Any ideas what his means?
Captain Jan 18, 2003, 11:03 AM This might help: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/Win2000/Q_20131047.html and this: http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/reskit/prmd_stp_oweb.asp
You could try using the windows update thing to make sure you have all the latest drivers and service packs. Have you installed some new hardware recently? It could be the aspi layer breaking things as win2k doesn't have one but its needed by many burning programs.
RZA Jan 18, 2003, 11:20 AM thanks for the links, but to be honest i'm not really sure i understand what they're on abou.....lol - i'll have another read
i have the latest service pack installed, can't do a windows update as that pc doesn' have internet access, as far as i know i have all the latest drivers
the blue screens appear whether i have an aspi installed or not, shoudl i try aspi 4.70 cos i have 4.60 installed atm
RZA Jan 18, 2003, 11:26 AM i noticed this in one of the links:
If the Stop message mentions the file Win32k.sys, the source of the error might be a third-party "remote control" program. If such software is installed, you might be able to disable it by starting the system in safe mode. If not, use Recovery Console to manually delete the system service file that is causing the problem. For more information about safe mode and Recovery Console, see "Tools for Troubleshooting" in this book.
Can anyoen explain this?
Also - the link u gave me it for windows xp, i'm using win2k - however i found a similar page for win2k and its basically the same
Captain Jan 18, 2003, 12:15 PM Have you got another video card you could try? Geforce cards and Via chipsets often cause problems. Other than that there isnt much else I can think of apart from re-installing or trying a different OS.
Have you always had problems when burning etc or is it a recent problem, maybe after installing something new?
RZA Jan 18, 2003, 04:20 PM i could try to boro another graphics card off a m8, but it would probably be some crappy old 4mb thing........
i have tryed xp on the pc, i sill get freezing but have never experienced a blue screen or reboot.
i recently bought a usb2 card so i could use my new external hard disk. at that time i was using xp, but in order to install he usb2 drivers i needed to get service pack one which i couldn't - therefore i went over to win2k. i also went to xp cos randomly when burning cds they started to take ages, with the buffer only being like 5% full (i have a 24x burner and it would take like 10-15 mins to burn a cd) hey now burn fine on win2k, apart from the blue screens of course..........
i have tryed reinstalling win2k but that didn't help
when u say via chipsets and geforce cards often cause problems - have u heard of a similar problem to mine being caused by this sort of conflict?
RZA Jan 19, 2003, 09:14 AM bump
Captain Jan 19, 2003, 09:26 AM Via chipsets often have issues with specific hardware so its hard to tell if it affects you. Easiest way is to put a few of your hardware names and the word 'problem' or 'help' into google and see what it comes up with. I was looking into a new graphics card but my motherboard has problems with the high end geforce cards so had to get an ATI instead.
All I can suggest really is to take out un-neccessary hardware like the USB2 card and re-install either XP or 2K and slowly add hardware until it causes reboots. If its CD burning that causes the reboot then maybe keep burning on cdrw discs until you find the problem.
Its even hardware when the PC has no internet access as you cant tell if its got the latest drivers for all its hardware using windows update.
It could be a power issue as CD burning will use more power than say web browsing so maybe your PSU isnt giving out enough watts.
The only way to solve a problem like this (in my experience) is to start from a fresh install with latest drivers and add hardware one by one.
Good luck.
RZA Jan 19, 2003, 10:06 AM yeh, its just adding a piece of hardware at a time like thatt takes ages......i'll have to wait a little while til my exams and coursework for school is out of the way
do you think there may be a link between my cdrw randomly burning really slowly in xp, wih the buffer only 5% full, and the blue screens when burning with win2k. coudl it be my cdrw has developed a fault, and the different os's respond differently?
Captain Jan 19, 2003, 04:38 PM Its hard to tell but the problems with the cdrw in two different OSs are almost certainly linked. More likely to be something has been installed (either hardware or software) which conflicts with the cdrw than it developing a physical fault. Maybe you could try a different cd burning tool and see if that helps.
RZA Jan 20, 2003, 06:04 AM ok i'll try some different cd burning sofare and let you know how i get on
thanks for all ur help
