I really need some help here, please. After reinstalling XP-Pro SP1 3 times the past 5 months due to Roxio Easy CD Creator screwing up the system, I completely removed it and DirectCD.

I had stored a bunch of important files on CDR and DVD-R, via DirectCD format, and now I cannot read those disks.

I switched to Nero, thinking that would solve my problems, reading so many positive comments on it, and now I discover that InCD can't handle CDR or DVD-R.

I installed Roxio's UDF reader but that didn't let me read the disks either (even after removing Nero and Musicmatch Juke Box).

I installed DirectCD from my ECDC Platinum 5 disk and it doesn't work now either. I find that Roxio has no separate update for DirectCD, and I absolutely refuse to reinstall ECDC and its latest update, just to update DirectCD.

If I have just DirectCD installed and then run the installation of the XP update of ECDC, will it update DirectCD and NOT install any other ECDC files to **** up my system?

I really need some help now, as I've been messing around with this for the last 3 weeks and have to get to my files.

Hi M8, My you are in a Pickle.........You can Load DirectCD into your Comp on its own without EZCD OK....It's a stand alone program....But in the past DirectCD was faulty in WinXP, not sure if they fixed it with a patch.....Best go on Roxio's site and check ALL Updates for WinXP..
Have you loaded in the ASPI layers...You must have them loaded in XP or Writer gets Problems, plus is DMA ticked n working.....
regards, Dennis...

Dennis,

The only updates for XP are for ECDC as a whole, none for Direct CD, per se. That's my concern, whether I can install DCD only and then apply the ECDC 5 Platinum (or basic?) updates to just update DCD without having it put any of the other ECDC files on the system.

ASPI and DMA are new to me. Could you tell me more.

Thanks.

Have you tried ISO Buster?

The registered version claims it can recover data from UDF created CD's.

No, I had never heard of ISO Buster, and thanks for the tip. I looked it over and will consider it. Can you clarify this: the web site states "Most of the functionality is still for free and will stay for free (e.g. all functionality of IsoBuster < 1.0) but if you need to recover UDF data from UDF discs (= new) then you will need to register!"

Does this mean recovery in the sense of lost or deleted files? I assume my files are intact on the disks, and all I want is to be able to read them and copy/delete them and write new files to those disks. Not that $20 is an unreasonable reg fee, but after paying for ECDC and Nero it irks me to have to pay more to access those files!

Thanks for the help.

I don't want to get your hopes up about ISO Buster and if it will work on your particular problem. I wish I could give you a better answer, but every problem is different and there really is no way of knowing what caused the corruption on your CD in the first place, or if ISO Buster will help.

All I can say is I've had very good results with this program on retrieving data from corrupt CD's. Just for giggles, download the program and run it in the unregistered mode. maybe it will work.

The unregistered version of ISOBuster will NOT read packet written CDs so it won't help unless you can spend $20.

If you only installed DirectCD, the update will only update DirectCD which is the component installed on the system. It will not update what is not on the system.

van nugent is spot on. The Roxio update should fix the problem of XP resetting & you only need to install DirectCD. BTW - I have EZCD5 & DirectCD installed in XP without probs after applying the update. I also think there was a problem with one of the tools (was it Take2?) which Roxio recommend you don't use with XP. This was a while ago so maybe it's OK now.
