Hi there...

I'm about to extract 200 CDs of RAW audio data (wav) with my
Actima 52X-drive.... To my surprise it peaks at around 12X and, I
don't know what I can do to increase the speed.

I'm running an Athlon XP 1800+ with 512MB ram, so I guess
it's not the systems fault?

I have also installed the S.A.T. program that comes with the
drive, but after selecting my desired speed, it says only that
current speed is unknown. (S.A.T. = Speed Adjustment Technology)

My hardware device manager (under Win XP) says I have an
"ATAPI CD-ROM 52X" driver installed.

I'm puzzeled.... Could anyone help me here?!?

Please!! 200CDs is a LOT of waiting in 12X... ;)

P.S. I'm using Audio Catalyst for the extraction

Sorry to say it, but that is no doubt as fast as it is able to extract audio. You may be able to get benchmark figures on this drive over at www.cdspeed2000.com/ Look for the DAE ratings chart and go from there. To be honest there are not that many drives that are real good at DAE, though there are a few, you will see lots of comments here about the LiteOn DVD Lt-163 and that's mainly because a lot of people use it as a reader because the DAE on that drive is different class.

Although a drive may be rated as a "52X" drive all that really means is that that is the maximum speed. There are other CD-Rom drives as you will find over at cdspeed that are good at data and DAE such as certain Teac, Afferey and Sony drives so if you plan on burning a lot of high speed audio OTF then it would make sense to change your drive.

Hope this helps. :)

Riiight. I didn't realize there would be SO much of a difference, but it all makes sense really... Different strokes for different folks. ;)

Thanks for the info, and for stopping me thinking that >I< was doing something wrong.

I have a Plexwriter too, and it extracts at least twice as fast. I guess
I'll use that instead.

Cheers & peace out!
