What are these dvd formats and can the xbox read them?

These are a newer and competing format to the DVD-R/-RW and they are completely different so don't try burning DVD-R/-RW on a + format drive and vice-versa. What version of xbox do you have as that makes a huge difference as to whether or not it will work. If you have a version 1.0 (manufacturers date on the bottom of your xbox) which means that it was manufactured prior to August 2002 the reliability of + format media is hit and miss. If it was manufactured between august of 2002 and november 2002 then check out www.xbox-scene.com as some of them are version 1.0 and some are 1.1. If it was manufactured between november 2002 and this month then the + format should work fine since the 1.1 version will support the + format (the - format is also compatible with this version). For both - and + steer clear of the rewritable formats (-RW and +RW) as the discs are more costly and on both versions of xbox may or may not work. Your best bet for overall compatibility and price is DVD-R (provided you use the recommended brands of media) as they offer the cheapest media and will work in both version 1.0 and 1.1. I hope this helps

Thanks, jesterrace777 my xbox was manufactored in august but i have an xecuter chip on it which means it is a version 1.0. I was planning on buying a dvd burner, but in my area the cheapest one is a hp dvd+r dvd+rw hp200i, would you recommend this or should i look for something else? Also the only brands of media ive seen around here is memorex dvd+r at 3 for 7 bucks will this work on xbox? Thanks

STEER CLEAR OF HP DRIVES AT ALL COSTS. THEY ARE AMONG THE WORST DVD BURNERS OUT THERE. All but one or two users on here who have tried these drives have had nothing but bad luck with them. I have only heard of 2 people having success with these units. Do you have an officemax or staples in your area as they have cendyne drives (these are the exact same drives as the Pioneers that everyone talks about on here) and have them for $250 (or if they have specials going like they often do you could pick up one of these for about $200 after a mail-in rebate). The cendyne105 (Pioneer105) drive support DVD-R at 4 speed burn vs. the hp (and many of the other brands of dvd+r drives) 2.4 speed burn. If you have a bestbuy in your area they carry fujifilm dvd-r media at $35 for a 10 pack which I know is more than the memorex dvd+r but these support the 4x burn and (I have yet to try games yet) play recorded dvd movies on my version 1.0 xbox just fine. If you really want to have a drive that plays + media get the dual format sony model dru500a which does DVD-R/-RW AND DVD+R/+RW. These will burn both DVD-R and DVD+R at 4x but the drive will run you about $350 and right now it is a little difficult to find. For version 1.0 I will still tell you that DVD-R has the greatest compatibility and that you are playing russian roulette with dvd+r discs.

this is way off topic talking about dvd drives.
