is there a program like the old CD IDENTIFIER that id's dvd-r . got some disc and just want to find out what they are

I think there is one on www.vcdhelp.com somewhere but most DVD-R are not what they appear to be. A lot of them give the manufacturer ID as TDK but unless they have TDK printed on the front they aren't made by TDK.

Try using DVDDecrypter in write mode. That gives you info about the disc.
