I hope I have placed this query in the correct section, if not I apologise.
I have replaced a dvd-rom drive with another, purely to upgrade.
Having done this, using the same settings and same cables I am getting problems.

As the pc boots up in dos I can see it listed but just before windows ME kicks in it freezes with an error, CMDNINST, I dont know why and dont understand the error.

If I unplug the drive and reboot it is OK.

I have searched round for drivers but cant find any that include/mention windows ME.

The drive is a Toshiba dvd-rom SD-M1712, new and supplied bare and so I have no disc, my system usually detects new installs but not this, can anyone help please if so,in simple terms, I have only basic knowledge of PC's.

Could there be a problem with my system.

Cheers

Did you upgrade to Windows ME from Win98?

You did uninstall the old one first.

The CMDNINST error means Windows can't load the driver for a device when booting up. Normally, when encountering this problem, one needs to go to the hardware maker's website to get a better driver but because the SD-M1712 is an IDE drive, we can't.

Try to boot in Safemode then remove the DVD drive from Device Manager then reboot the system.

Hi zedy
my Windows ME is what was laoded at the factory when I got it about 3 years ago.

Van Nugent,
So it looks like I might be abit stuck with this drive.
In case it is my o/s I am thinking of first restoring and if nothing improves
using my Reload/Backup disc, to put it back to factory settings when I first got it.
Then I shall download from the Microsoft site any updates they have.

And hope it works otherwise I have a useless drive on my hands, until a drive becomes available.

Oh well have to see what happens.

Cheers m8's

Hi all thanks for your input everyone.
It turned out I think I had a virus or at least something in my system was messing things up, so I decided to do a complete restore, bit of a bind, especially having to reload all the bits I had added, but appears to have been worthwhile.

The drive seems fine other than in the spec details it seems to imply it reads cdg, but it doesnt appear to.

Cheers
