Hi

Can anybody tell me, how risky are firmware updates, whats the worst that could happen?

The reason I ask is that I have a TEAC512EB firmware revision 2.0A whicj has an update on the website for 2.0E.

I have been having trouble recording DATA (not audio) onto CDs using Nero and Diskjuggler. At random occasions the process will stop and I will get the 'blue screen' informing me of a 'windows protection error' and that I must press any key etc. I have tried closing all programs beforehand but as I said it happens at random occasions.

Would dl'ing this revision help, please can anybody offer any advice as I am wasting many CDS on this problem...

Thanks

how risky firmware updates, normally unless you live in a bad mains supply area the risk is minimal.normally 99% no problems.the risk as i say is if when you are flashing the writers firmware the mains goes off then the eprom will die and so will the writer.so normally no problems.updateing firmware is usefull as the manufacters do this for improving the writer with say certain software and media.would look on the teac website and see what the new firmware does to impove the drive.just to say i have flashed 3 of my writers and no problems.colin

I’ve just upgraded the firmware on my Lite-On LTR-24102B. I didn’t know if I should do it myself or get the local computer shop to do it for me. In the end, with help from members of the CDROM Guide (you know who you are), I did it myself.

I’m not sure if this applies to you or not, but I’m sure someone will correct me if I’m wrong (they usually do).

First of all, disable any Anti-Virus programs you have running. Then disable DMA (you have to then re-boot). Make sure there are no disks in the drive. Also worth checking your screensaver, power management and scheduler, just in case one of these cut in just at the wrong moment. I think you should also disable some of the programs running in the background. If you press CTRL+ALT+DEL you’ll see all the programs running. Leave SYSTRAY and EXPLORER.

All you have to do then is run the firmware upgrade program. Check first to see if you have to do this from DOS.

Good luck.
