My late Father took hundreds, possibly thousands (haven't found 'em all yet) of 35mm color slides from the early 1950's to the late 1970's. Many are beginning to deteriorate so I decided to scan them and burn them to discs so everyone in the family would have copies. Initially I bought an HP 5370cse with the optional slide adapter and while it has been an outstanding flatbed it's slide capability was disappointing. The color was great but anything over a 3 X 3 print was out of the question. The other day I broke down and ordered a dedicated slide/film scanner, a Pacific Image PrimeFilm 1800u. My first run throughs were very disappointing as the images were severely washed out when using the bundled photo software to activate the scanning software and no amount of editing would bring out the proper colors. I was about ready to give up on it when I decided to try MicroSoft's Picture It 2001 to activate the scanning software (CyberView 2.41) this morning. WOW! What a difference! The 1800u is not quite as user friendly as my HP as you kind of have to come in by the back door to get really high quality scans but the detour is definitely worth it. For a home user or hobbyist I would have to say this thing is great. The pros might have a different opinion, I don't know, but in a period of about 15 minutes I went from disgusted to overjoyed. I can't wait until I e-mail my oldest sister the picture Dad took of her with her nose against the window when she was about 9, she's gonna kill me.................
