danman Feb 01, 2003, 03:13 PM So I've ordered one from big pockets but am quite amazed that nobody yet has posted opinions or questions about it.
Big pockets have it listed as a replaement for the DRU500A, however I done a google search and the more likely explanation is that it's an OEM DRU500A.
If anyone else can expand on this so I know what's actually coming my way I'd be very grateful.
Thanks
Dan
Lazza Feb 02, 2003, 07:04 AM Yep, some sites are trying to pull a fast one (one I noticed did change their ad wording by the next day though), even had me fooled til I checked up with Sony.
This is 100% an OEM version of the DRU-500A, some companies are trying to make out it is a new model and charge £30/40 more than it's worth when compared to a boxed retail version.
dangerouseddy Feb 02, 2003, 07:06 AM yep and you get no support from sony either it being an oem version from what i hear.
danman Feb 02, 2003, 08:16 AM Dont much care about support, will I be able to use DRU500A firmware do you think? The software wasnt an issue for me anyway.
Lazza Feb 02, 2003, 11:15 AM I've just been told that it has an upgraded firmware on it and that there are a couple of subtle other changes to the unit. Don't know if you will be able to flash it with 500 firmware though.
danman Feb 02, 2003, 03:09 PM Thanks Lazza.
Hopefully find out myself Tomorrow/Tuesday
danman Feb 04, 2003, 10:15 AM Well, this baby arrived today. Slotted her in burned 2 DVD off of my raid card (same as my A04 is connected to) they burned at approx 2x so I opened her up and put it on my IDE2 Master (something which I could never get my A04 to work on ??) and bingo a full 4.4 gig in 16 mins and 06 seconds. This was start to finnish incl Lead in/out under Nero. Even with the latest update (PX engine) I cant get it recognised under Record Now Max which is a bummer as thats my fave for DVD.
Played my film in a 3 diff players and it's sweet. Using 4x Datasafe printable top DVD-R Manufactured by Ritek.
Just verified the burn and there appear to be no errors either soooooooo.
Top ol drive. Buy one now.

danman Feb 04, 2003, 01:58 PM Sony DWU10A DVD
From Big Pockets @ £279.
Burned 4x whilst surfing/printing and all went swimmingly :-)
ThE SnAkE Feb 04, 2003, 04:43 PM is it worth spending £279.00 do u think? because i aint that rich. lol not saying you are...
danman Feb 05, 2003, 07:19 AM On the ballance I'd say yes. I've had Pioneer DVD Writers since the A03 very first came out. To be honest I've never really thought they were all that.
Theres something about this Sony that just Feels btter. Fair play it's £80 more than an A05 but still good value.

ThE SnAkE Feb 12, 2003, 09:14 AM i think £207.00 is roughtly the right price u should pay. its still a good price. can anyone else confirm how much they paid for the drive from mesh comp?
.o0 Rush 0o. Feb 12, 2003, 06:25 PM I have seen an ad in Personal Computer World (March 2003) and on page 21 of their ad is the "Sony Multi Burner" £169 Ex VAT. Delivery is £10 so all in all that comes to £210 ish.
I did not receive my Sony today, but I did receive an invoice for the drive and it says £149 EX VAT + £10 Del.... = £186.83
On my first phone call to them, I was told that the drive was £169 EX VAT and that they only sell to owners of Mesh PC's. The 2nd time I was sold the drive, no questions asked, for £149 EX VAT.... go figure.
If you wish to call them ask for Salesman MINESH CHIKNIWALA
on 020 8208 4744... I'll let you try the pronunciation of that name :)
