The A04 is quoted as having a read speed of 6x for DVD and 2x for DVD-R and DVD-RW. So using a DVD-ROM with 12x or 16x will obviously improve your ripping speeds.
Check the Consumer's Opinion forum for which DVDROM to get.

For some reason, I can't rip a lot of dvdrs using my sony 16x dvd rom drive, but when I put it in my a04, it will rip fine.

dartamayo, your settings may be wrong. i think that your a04 should be the master and your dvd rom the slave on 1 ide channel. this may help with your problem. if you have your dvdrom on the same channel as your hard drive this may be what is causing your problem. i had a similar problem awhile ago and changing the connection and settings on the drive helped. as far as getting a dvdrom as your reader it is a good idea because you will put less where and tear on your $300 investment using a $40 drive that will read faster anyway. i use a nec dvdrom and it is a much faster reader. it used to take me 35 minutes to read a normal dvd with my a03. it now take 5-10 minutes with my nec.
