Michael467 Feb 06, 2003, 06:11 PM Have narrowed my search for a new hard drive to the following, based on the cash I have available to blow on one;
(1) Maxtor Diamondmax Plus 9 60gb, 7200rpm
OR
(2) Western Digital Caviar 40gb, 7200rpm
Is it worth sacrificing the 20gb and go with what appears to be the more reliable WD or are the Maxtors just as good.
Let me know your thoughts out there. Gotta get this drive ordered tomorrow!

DIABLO Feb 06, 2003, 06:23 PM Both are good makes you would be happy with either so go with the biggest one.
Michael467 Feb 06, 2003, 06:25 PM Points so far....
Maxtor 1
WD 1

Spagboll Feb 07, 2003, 05:46 AM I actually have both makes of HD in my pc right now. Both are as good as each other in my opinion. Not had a problem with either one.
Mike ( Spagboll ) ... :)
stato Feb 07, 2003, 01:28 PM I have had a fair few maxtors in the past and tend to stick with them now. Never had a single problem with one yet.
HAZ30 Feb 07, 2003, 05:09 PM Been using Maxtor for a few years now and never had any probs.
dangerouseddy Feb 07, 2003, 06:35 PM yep ive got a wd and a maxtor drive both are working fine.
bear in mind most hd's only come with a 1 year warranty now instead of a 3 year one :(
Jaice Feb 08, 2003, 12:51 AM I got both im my PC now, just stay away from Seagate.
Michael467 Feb 08, 2003, 06:29 AM Looks like I'm gonna go for the Maxtor....
Thanks for the feedback

DR69ON Feb 08, 2003, 04:46 PM WD and Maxtor are about the same, like jaice said, stay away from the seagate, they usually lure people with thier low prices.
TOOL Feb 10, 2003, 12:29 PM I've had no probs with my WD drive so far. Also stay away from the IBM deskstar series. I've had mine for only 24 months and it sounds as if it is about to kick the bucket soon:(
420 Apr 23, 2003, 08:33 PM Oki, old topic now but had to express my distaste for the crap drives that WD spits out these days. Bought a 120GB WD in December 2002. It's now April 2003 and the drive is full of bad blocks, completely useless. However, my 2 5 year old Maxtor drives are running strong. Stick with Maxtor.
aznkidlee Apr 23, 2003, 09:39 PM i have used about 3 maxtor HDs so far and they still up and running.
DR69ON - Whats wrong with seagate? I have a seagate on one of my comps and it runs fine.
VWRabbit Apr 23, 2003, 09:50 PM Have both right now but most of my experience is with Maxtor. Never had a problem with Maxtor and Future Shop in Canada has great deals on them regularly. Only had my WD for a month so no opinion yet but its still working.
ps2wiz Apr 24, 2003, 01:12 AM I've got both of them in my comp...
And I can't really notice a difference.
fawlty Apr 24, 2003, 01:30 AM I've got a 120g WD & Maxtor & both work fine.
The WD is a lot quieter though.
ElaineM Apr 24, 2003, 01:46 AM I would say that they are about the same. However I've heard that the Maxtors are quieter. So does anyone have any specific Maxtor and WD models to compare?
nightheart Apr 24, 2003, 02:19 AM No specific models to compare, but I'll only run maxtors. Never had one go bad yet, but my only WD, a 40 gig 7200 never did work right.
bingo73 Apr 24, 2003, 10:03 PM I was told maxtor has the best quality but WD is quite. It depends. I have both maxtor 60G and WD 30G. Both work fine.
Dave2986 Apr 25, 2003, 06:40 AM i love my WD 80gig HD
but i would look at both makes, and just go with one that the reviews come out on top with
and get good cooling for them as they do run hot
420 Apr 25, 2003, 06:52 AM My WD is on its way back - disk went bad after 4 months. A visit to a local shop in search of a Maxtor ended up in me having a conversation with the owner about the drives he carries - WD and Samsung. According to him both the Samsungs and WDs have been being returned in droves - disks going bad fast. Then I went to Staples and picked up a Maxtor with a 3-year warranty. Keeping my fingers crossed, but in the past, they have always been good to me. :)
