I've found ffdshow to be the best codec alongside Windows Media Player. Although the playback still isn't as smooth as on my FreeBSD box with halve the power/mem etc and a crap graphics card. Doesn't say much for Windows if you ask me.

XviD binaries can be found at:

http://xvid.hopto.org/
http://roeder.goe.net/~koepi/xvid.shtml
http://leffe.dnsalias.com/~nic/

You can of course use ffdshow for decoding as stated above, also for decoding, divx, msmpeg4, etc.

ffdshow is the best i have tried so far for decoding xvid (infact for one or two of my movies its the only one that works at all)
heres an easy link to the latest distribution
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/ffdshow/ffdshow-20020617.exe?download

That isn't the latest, the latest would be the 2003.01.22 alpha. Anything you download though is likely from the stable builds and therefor would not include any experimental features, it should therefor decode fine with XviD, DivX5.xx, etc.
