lhys09915 Feb 16, 2003, 11:51 AM when i try to scan hard drive from restart it says cant open volume for direct access.anyone no what to do? lhys09915 Feb 16, 2003, 04:16 PM anyone? Jono2003 Feb 16, 2003, 04:24 PM i have the same problem would not mind knowing how to sort this, come on guys Ronaldsoft Feb 16, 2003, 09:24 PM This can be caused by a 3rd party application locking the partition such as a virus checker or disk monitor tool. To correct disable any 3rd party services or devices that may be locking the partition. - Start the Services control panel applet (Start - Settings - Control Panel - Services) - Select the service and click Startup - Set the startup type to Manual and click OK - Repeat for any other services - Start the Devices control panel applet (Start - Settings - Control Panel - Devices) - Set the startup type to disabled for any 3rd-party devices who you think might be causing the lock problem but BE CAREFUL. If you are unsure the device you are disabling may stop system startup create a second hardware profile and test. - Restart the machine, the drive should no longer be locked lhys09915 Feb 17, 2003, 05:14 AM there is no option that says startup. lhys09915 Feb 17, 2003, 07:15 AM i have tried norton disk doctor with the same results. lhys09915 Feb 17, 2003, 10:56 AM i realy need help with this on xphome i know i have errors on the drive.were it is supposed to scan at startup it does nothing. hothi Feb 17, 2003, 02:44 PM try safe mode and system recovery, at boot from your xp CD and choose "repair" lhys09915 Feb 17, 2003, 03:36 PM how do i boot in safe mode?i am new to xp. lhys09915 Feb 17, 2003, 06:27 PM anyone else had this problem and fixed it? nightheart Feb 18, 2003, 06:37 AM To boot into XP, press f8 at start-up, BEFORE the XP slash screen starts. Then select safe mode and boot. I might get hosed for this, but I was never a big fan of Norton's disk utilities. Anti-virus and firewall are great, but I have seen Norton disk doctor hose a completely good win 98 system. Never used them since. If thats installed it might not be playing well with scandisk and the disk defragmentor. lhys09915 Feb 21, 2003, 01:31 PM when i open adminastrive tools and open services theres nothing that says startup. also in control panel i cannot find devices to set startup type to disable. anyone else can help. the scandisk did work when xphome was installed over win98.after a clean install things started to go wrong. freakit Feb 21, 2003, 01:57 PM will running the WINXP cd to repair loose the installed programs? i have a program that is written the registry. i had to get an unlock key to open the program. will i lose this program and have to get a new key? also will running the repair option work if i wanted to get a new mobo or will i have to totally reinstall XP? thanks!!!!!!!!! nightheart Mar 01, 2003, 07:29 PM For the start-up deal, if its software you wanna disable you have to goto the run command and type msconfig. If its hardware you have to disable it in the device manager. As for the Xp repair option, you will lose anything microsoft doesn't approve of. Any unsigned drivers, and most programs. I'd back-up what you can and do a clean install. The repair option takes the same amount of time. 'bought the only the thing the repair option is good for is to repair a boot loader. Just my 2 cents. |
