When this is delivered what is the best firmware to use? Is it best just to go for the latest or what?
Also, what (decent) media does this drive like?
Thanks for reading!

Definitely upgrade the to the latest firmware as the one that comes with it has been known to have trouble. For DVD-R like all drives that support - format I would recommend Ritek, Verbatim and if all else fails try fujifilm. Go to www.meritline.com as they have a special on Ritek silver tops right now.
I hope this helps.

I would go with an upgrade to the "F" firmware. The newest is "G",but I am waiting for a couple more weeks to be sure there are no problems reported with it.As for media I have had very good luck with Accu and Lead Data 1x.These write at 2x with the f or g firmware. The L D cost me 69 cents each shipped,in the US.Ritek are also good, but there is no need to pay a premium to get Verbatim. As for the firmware that comes loade having trouble,I find that not true.I did have a great deal of trouble with the Pioneer firmware, but not with the Sony 500a.If it does not come with f or g firmware, upgrade it to support more media.

Thanks for the information all of you, one more question...how do I tell what firmware I get with the drive when it gets here?
Sorry if it's obvious but I'm new to the world of DVD writing!

You will only be able to upgrade the firmware if it truly is a 500A. For the most part right now they are only shipping out the 500AX which has a comletly different firmware revisoin.
