had similar problem. had to reinstall the aspi layer. you can get it from adaptec.com. also go to your system properties and choose hardware, device manager, ide ata/atapi controllers. make sure the one that your reader is attached to is set to dma if avaliable in the advanced tab. if the setting is otherwise this can cause you the slowdown. also, if none the above work there is program called forceapsi that should update your aspi layer. if you need it email me.

went to device manager i assume device o-is the master and 1 is the secondary if so both are set transfer mod dma-current transfer mode pio
though i have not yet restarted the pc it may change
gone to adaptec found this
For Windows XP, select Start - Run from the menu, and then the Browse button. Locate the INSTALL.BAT file in the directory the files extracted to and select the OPEN button. In the command box, add a space and either XP32 for Pentium I/II/III/IV processors or XP64 for Itanium processors. The command should look like: c:\adaptec\aspi\install.bat XP32 or c:\adaptec\aspi\install.bat XP64. Then select the OK button to run the XP installer.the processor bit is a bit vauge to me what is a itanium processor mine is a athlon 1800x

if your using xp try to do a system restore to a point before you started to have the problem. now it looks like your in the right spot but your setting is wrong. pio will slow you down. does it say pio only or is it set to dma if avaliable and it say that it is in pio mode? if the setting is pio only change it and restart. if not ill send you the file you need for xp.

you will have the aspi checker which will check your apsi version and tell you if it is up to date and a apsi installer for just about all windows aspi layers including xp. the file is self extracting and named aspiinst.

sounds like the right file. you may need to shut down the computer for a minute and restart to update. check settings and see if you now have dma instead of pio in hardware settings.

4 should be correct. there are 2 other options. i have a program called force apsi that may help to update your aspi layer or you could reformat your drive and do a clean install of everything. did you try to go to a earlier restore point say a week or 2 ago to see if that works? programs, accessories, system tools, system restore. better to try this than the timely reinstall process.

i know it stinks but it only takes on program to screw up your settings. i had the same problem you had and my final solution was the format of my hd and the reinstall worked. try the forceaspi. if you dont want to send me your email go to google.com and search for it. even if the adaptec file says it current, this program may help you. my nec dvd drive with proper settings would read a disc in 10 minutes. when it was screwed 30 so i know your frustration. if you do the reinstall and all works, manually create a save point for future reference so if something gets screwed up you can easily restore.

sounds like your having the same problem i had last night, slowed my whole pc down not just my burning, dma was enabled but it still transferred in pio mode i had my reader on ide 1 and my writer on ide 2 couldn't get xp to let me change from pio to dma, in the end i swapped the reader and writer round so the reader was on ide 2 and the writer on ide 1, when i restarted my pc xp thoght it had found new hardware and installed both drives with dma enabled now its running at full speed again, hope this helps.
