I need some info on the "legality" of owning a modded PS2 here in the USA. There are so many businesses and people that are selling them so I'm thinking it's actually legit. I know it is illegal to get pirated games and modded PS2 allows you to play them... But for example in Australia, it is legal to own a modded PS2 because a modded PS2 can allow you play import games and region free dvd's. Sony lost on a lawsuit because the courts felt that Sony was restricting customer choices... But here in the states what is the official statement about owning a modded PS2? Thanks for the input guys...

Bit time grey area mate..

I don't think anyone can be sure about it. The only argument that normally comes out of a question like this is the fact that in theory you've bought and paid for your PS2 so you should be able to do ANYTHING you like to it.

Fitting a chip circumvents the PS2's in-built copy-protection systems which according to Sony breaks the law. I'm not convinced myself as I fit chips! Nobody's knocked on my door yet!!

I agree with spagboll, if you bought it, its yours and you can do what u like with it, but once you use it thats when it becomes debatable!!

Yup it is a grey area. I have heard that it is illegal to purchase modchips but, I don't know how so many businesses get around selling them. Just tread carefully and you should be fine.
