Are modchips for ps2/xbox illegal?

if you own the box, can't you do with it what your like?

(btw this is for europe and the uk, i don't care what the stupid americans do, their laws are crazy anyway)

I hope you're referring to some of the American laws being stupid and not Americans as a whole, as this may be considered a flame and could possibly result in your thread being closed.
As far as I'm concerned, yes you should be able to do what you want with your property in a free country (We DO have a lot of STU-PID laws), but again, I am american, so you may not care.

no madki88 there are plenty of good reasons for having a modchip.

1) playing games you have bought in a different region. Its called fair trade, but when its fair trade going the opposition direction companes dont like that. less $£ for them.

2) when you have backed up a copy of a game you own so the original doesnt get scratched. (illegal in some countries)

I always thought that modchips were legal in the sense that companies sold them with the function of running imported games.

They use a loophole in order to make it legal to sell. You see it everywhere. Like that DVD security cracker is legal in the sense that you are using it to backup your DVD movies. Also, those satellite programmer cards are legal in the sense that companies are selling them as a security device. And how people are able to sell backup copies of software to people who already "own" it.

I thought they were must be just in America.

@tienlen: ok, they're used for illegal purposes (or can be used), but that doesn't make it illegal: a mod is legal! when you're playing copies from rented/friend's games, that's illegal. but the chip is not !!!

or

b) the complete underground tunnel system of the houses of parliment. With ideal places to put blasting dynamite.

Which one is more likely to be illegal? But in the end its still a piece of paper.

not if your buying import USA games,there is plenty of shops in the Uk that you can buy import games in,Selling Mod chips is not illegal,its what people do with them once fitted in their console thats illegal,but thats a different matter.
