Also i currently have my dvd rom drive at the top of my base unit, and my cd writer underneath, which of these will the dvd writer replace?

Umm might I suggest a search button. There is a format war going on between + and -. - seems to have the overall advantage when it comes to the cost of media (make sure you search for which brands to use as some of them are pure crap) and + seems to have the advantage for rewritable technology. Both formats are similar in compatibility in stand alone dvd players (any one who tells you otherwise is spouting propoganda) but the biggest difference in the formats comes in with making backups of videogames (PS2 and XBOX). Don't get me wrong there are a fair number of people who have done game backups with + format and had great success but it seems that recommended brands of DVD-R have the greatest success with game backups. I will recommend for dvd burners 1. The sony dru500a dual format drive (this one with support both + and - formats) costs around $350. 2. Any of the Pioneer/Cendyne drives these support the - format only but they are rated very highly and you will be able to find plenty of support for them here as a good chunk of us own one. If you live in the US and keep your eye out for specials you can pick up a cendyne (exact same as a Pioneer with a different label on the box) for under $200. To put it in a nutshell it all depends what you are planning on using the DVD burner for and if the cost of media is that important to you. I hope this helps.

Try looking at the sticky on the different formats.
The DVD writer will replace any drive you want or better yet get a new case and have all three.
