Thermaltake Volcano 9 or the Thermaltake Volcano 7 + vari speed

the 7 will take upto an athalon xp 2700+ and the 9 takes up to a 2600+ i have a 2600+ (333mhz) cpu is it better to go for a heatsink that will take over your cpu mhz like the 7 or will the 9 be better ??

please help

cheers

What are the features/price comparison and do you intend to upgrade your cpu in the future.....?

I'm using a Coolermaster with vari-speed and to be honest i've never really bothered to adjust the fan speed, but there again I don't overclock or have any heat issues.

hi mate thanks for the replys the heatsinks are both on here

http://www.aria.co.uk/DisplayProducts.asp?Category=13&page=2&orderby=

i have just upgraded so not planning to do so in a long time. I just really wanna know which is the best one ?? and whether its ok to go for a heat sink/fan that is rated a max of 2600 when im using a 2600 or is it best to go for the 2700 one ??

lmk mate

cheers

Hi Matt

Just reading some of the comments relating to the 7+ that if it's turned up full then it seems to be very noisy, however some people are running low to middle and it seems ok. I think i'd have a look at overclockers as well as they have some serious h/sink/fans as well.
Have'nt really answered your question have I :( going above your rated cpu would probably mean better cooling/efficiency but there again there is very little in it anyhow...

its not that i wanna go over the xp2600 i was just wondering if its ok to use a heatsink/fan thats only rated max to the cpu that i have ??? or is it better to get one that will go over ? Or what cooler would you recomend ?

also the cpu cooler im using at the mo is the one that came bundled an official amd one. It came with a sticky tab like thermal compound. What shall i use to remove this ? i take it that it would have melted all over the cpu by now ?? ppl say use isopropyl alcohol but thats illegal to sell to the public now so what shall i use ??

cheers

You could use any alcohol based cleaner, cdrom cleaner for instance. I've found that the only part of the pad that will melt is the part in direct contact with the cpu. In answer to your question and without sounding condescending :) if it's rated to the cpu then it would of been tested to withstand the temps that the CPU will run at and probably beyond so you should be ok unless of course you intend to 'overclock' then you'll need to rethink your whole system cooling strategy.

As I said in my reply i'm using a Coolermaster HAC-V81 with an AthlonXP 2100+ running at 40c idle and around 48c under load.

ok mate thanks for the info i just read somewhere that its best to go for a cpu that will have a higher threshold than what your cpu is rated at.

i really need to get a new one and some arctic iii looking on aria what would you get ??

thanks for the help

i got the Thermalright SLK-800 CPU Cooler from overclockers, excellent cooler and interchangeable size fans can be fitted depending on what noise level you want.Would highly reccommend, rated to Athlon XP2800+

there is also the 900 series out with fixings direct to the motherboard if you into taking your pc box for a walk to a lan party
