identitys Mar 10, 2003, 10:17 AM Hi all you budding kj's out there - here is a question for you I have been roped into doing some karaoke for a medium sized pub here in Cyprus and I really cannot sing a note and it does concern me a little - I have the rest of the gas but the voice is not good guys - DO YOU REALLY HAVE TO SING? I was rather hoping to get away with putting on some original artists songs to save me murdering my punters.
What is the boards kj opinion on this subject? will make interesting reading.

oxocubeman Mar 10, 2003, 10:24 AM You dont have to sing, rest easy, but you will feel like after all the tone deaf eejits have murdered every song you ever loved. When you find a decent chanter make friends and buy them a liquer every other time they get up, it encourages others. Don't be afraid to play the worst version of any song you find. I have found that Vinnie Jones versions are equivalent to the average karaoke punters attempt, use him as an example, lol, but dont tell him I said that. One other song that is dire, Danny Boy by Rose Marie, ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I always meant to share that.
Smurfette Mar 10, 2003, 11:01 AM You don`t have to sing. If you have any friends that sing make sure their at your karaoke and get them up to sing first :D At least that way you know that you are going to have some singers present and it`ll encourage other people to sing too
Well thats what my mate does anyway ;)

TraffO7 Mar 10, 2003, 11:50 AM And if no friends are drunk enough, or got the bottle to kick off the night for you, put on some good old classics like Abba's Dancing Queen from a
Original Footage VCD or similar, so they can watch and listen to the Artist, then flick your MPX button..........let them sing...................LOLOL

identitys Mar 10, 2003, 03:45 PM I like the idea of not having to sing and thanks guys for putting my mind at rest - the original artist songs suggested by traffo sound good to me.
I think I will learn a couple of simple songs , but now I feel the pressure is off a bit - any suggestions of some simple uncomplicated songs to learn ?

Smurfette Mar 10, 2003, 03:48 PM A friend of mine that couldn`t sing used to do I`m Too Sexy by Right Said Fred. Its more spoken than sung!!!! :)
vinniedub Mar 10, 2003, 07:46 PM make a joke of it mate, learn some comedy tunes or songs which nobody will take too seriously (I'm too sexy is a pretty good example) If you have some decent patter to go along with them and don't take YOURSELF too seriously then you can get away with almost anything. GOOD LUCK!
TraffO7 Mar 10, 2003, 08:02 PM For uncomplicated songs, try Daydream Believer by the Monkees, the audience normally outsing you on that one, or something easy by Elvis, might be a good start point for you, mate..............

oxocubeman Mar 10, 2003, 08:03 PM Sing along songs that work, Volare Dean Martin and Mack the Knife Robbie or Bobby Darin, classics that are now familiar to young ones. Hey Baby can be sung by anyone as can Country Roads Hermes House or John Denver and of course Elvis. I got a version of Nobodys Child for the ancients but its too long, they fall asleep before its finished so look for short songs to and dont forget Alice.
vinniedub Mar 10, 2003, 08:11 PM ALICE? ALICE?..............................
oxocubeman Mar 10, 2003, 08:35 PM LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL, yes, Alice
identitys Mar 11, 2003, 01:46 AM la la la la la la la - this is me practising.

DjRhythm Mar 11, 2003, 04:02 AM Heres what i used to do m8......id start off by introducing myself, as been a proffesional singer, and encourage the audience not to be put off by my excellent voice (really build myself up), then id break in to something like Bros - When will I be Famous, and id purposely kill the song (making this obviouse to the audience), then after the 1st refrain or so id drop the music a little bit, and looking rather proud of myself ask the audience if theyd like more (from me) ..guaranteed to get yells of NO!!...this is a great oppotunity then to "grab" someone from the audience to finish of the song, or indeed getting your first volunteer up...The Ice has been Broken :-)
oxocubeman Mar 11, 2003, 05:03 AM Dont forget Identitys to sing solo..........................................so lo they cant hear you, lol.
gram77ok Mar 11, 2003, 07:21 AM point is thats a great idea actually. but round here where i live they ant got no sense of humour at all .....i'd love to do something like that but i know all i would get is the '' big time charlies'' giving me flak...in one of my resident gigs we have a big time charlie who everyone is **** scared of and he stands at the bar and gives out the verbal abuse to every singer all night, hes a bully you know one of those''i pump myself up with steroids every friday night to look dead hard'' type i just wish i could whack him with my mike stand and kill the b'stad.....everyone is frightened of getting up singing now and ive told the boss but the boss and the local police (shithouses) are also scared of him......i reckon ive got 3 weeks left before i lose it....we have lost about 50 to 60 punters to another pub because of this one man and his wannabee's . sad isnt it a pub that used to rock for me is now on its arse.......any hitmen out there ! lol
oxocubeman Mar 11, 2003, 08:24 AM I know exactly what you mean but the solution that I found may work for your pub, pay the scumbag officially to KEEP order, play on his inflated ego that he is the only one who could do it, not a lot of money and even cheaper if paid in drink, my pub now has order for the singers, even the crap ones and he gives me the thumbs up.Sometimes you can't kick against the "barstewards"........go on my son.
gram77ok Mar 11, 2003, 12:19 PM mmm not a bad idea....ill talk that one through with tony....landlord and premier league shitouse...lol
MARKOMAXIMUS Mar 11, 2003, 11:25 PM i think if you can sing ,you earn the respect of your punters, they like to know the person running the show has the ability and know how,
its like a footall manager who cant play, he has no respect, from his players
so all you lot out there that cant sing and think they are doing a good job are kidding themselves
oxocubeman Mar 12, 2003, 05:11 AM Hope that helped you, Identitys, lol.
identitys Mar 12, 2003, 11:40 AM Thanks all you kj's the input has been most welcomed.
I may try and learn a few songs just in case the punters revolt.
