I am using Pinnacle Studio 8.5.21 with its 1394 AV/DV capture card (Deluxe), write to DVD via NERO.

The DVD quality is inferior to the original VHS tape which is 20 years old.

Tried the Pinnacle DC10+, capture was green and dark.

Must address quality!!!!!!!!!

Umm, well it was never going to improve the quality just cos you transferred it to digital over analogue. Infact there is always going to be degradation whenever you convert or copy anything in this way.

There are encoders and filters etc that you could use to redress certain video complaints i.e. colour/brightness etc, but generally speaking you will never be able to put more detail in than was originally there.

Don't want better than original but at least close to the original.

Yep, I once tried it & it looked at best, like vcd. But then I bought a dvd recorder & its me the original quality, actually a little better.

What are you using for capture? What make & model recorder?

Panasonic e30. Doesn't need capture software. Its a dvd player/recorder not in the computer. Just output from a dvd player into it & it writes to dvd directly, no writing time at all cause its doing it when you're recording. cool, huh? the menus it makes are a little simple. takes 4 minutes to close a disk.

Thanks, handyguy

Does anyone else have any comments regarding quality?

If you are doing analogue capture then you can get better quality by capturing 2-3 times and then averaging as this helps to reduce random analogue noise.

Does that count??

How does one "average"?

Well there is more than one way to do it, I would use AVISynth, but even then there is more than one way to do it.

What are other ways?

No idea, as I said, I would use AVISynth and therefor do not need to consider otherways.

I made just vcds from vhs, that was the best quality I could get.

my e30 dvd recorder of course, makes a better than vhs copy.

Don't know if this could be an issue, but you said that the quality was green and dark. Could this be because the VHS tape is macrovision protected.

I have just started looking into how I might copy our VHS tapes to DVD just to reduce the bulk size. Have read that many are macrovision protected and I think one of the symptoms was a dark green hue.

Any can't say for sure...

Sorry to jump in but I use Video Studio 6 for backing up my DVDs from video, I find it depends on the quality of the tape you use, I find BASF is the best. The quality of my transfer is second to none, but you will find it will never come to DVD standarde, mine do not look like VCDS, I would put a few sites up for you to get help on this but, I dont think I am allowed to.

I get a green screen if no signal is present too,so culd be protection or a pal/ntsc thing (regions).

no one knows what the chance of a dvd player being available in the future is but video cassettes become fuzzy around the fifteenth year according to sony.

The source tapes are 20 year old VHS home movies. The green was with signal and was DC10+ dependent.
