If the price difference is that minimal then DEFINITELY get the 1300 as for an extra 14 pounds you get to enjoy DVD-R/-RW as well as DVD+R/+RW. This will allow you to go through the different formats and pick out which media is cheapest at the time (generally speaking DVD-R has the cheapest media). The 1100a only supports DVD+R/+RW so you won't have as many options as the 1300.

Gotta agree, not much price difference so I would definatly go the 1300. Anyway I'm moving this to CoOp.

For the small price difference the 1300 looks good. I did read that the all the internals are the same on the 1100 and 1300. The suggestion was that you flash an 1100 with 1300 firmware and your 1100 can then handle + and - media.

Yeah, but for the small price difference he might as well avoid the hassle and just get the 1300. If what you suggested isn't true (kvee) then he will have a big headache trying to get the thing to work and eventually returning the unit and buying the 1300 anyway. Might as well just spend the extra 14 pounds and get the drive that you know for a fact supports both instead of taking your chances.

id definitely get the 1300A

we finally got a retail online distributor thats selling the 1100a here in the states.

its a great price at $199, and i estimate the 9 pounds difference in the 1100A/1300A on your scale is worth it even more.

What do you mean "finally"? Dell has been selling them at thier site for several months. It is an unlisted drive but everyone who has one says that it has the NEC ND1100A stamped on it. I agree though that dell is way overcharging for it ($350 last time I checked OUCH).

No argument. Just pointing out that Dell has carried them for a while. Sorry if it came out the wrong way man. No offense intended.
