What is the difference between optical zoom and digital zoom and which is best?

Optical zoom physically zooms the image with the lense and digital attempts to zoom using software in the camera. Optical will ALWAYS be better than digital, so don't bother with a digital zoom, they are 'normally' rubbish anyway and tend to pixelate the image.
