ps2wiz Mar 13, 2003, 01:01 AM Just as the subject says, im looking for one that will specifially load CD drives, I've complied several of my own and got some of bootdisk.com but none of them will work. Smiffy280361 Mar 13, 2003, 02:31 AM What is the difference bewteen a 486 and a pentium/II/III/IV or AMD Bootdisk with CD ROM Drive support. I would of thought that the command line in both config.sys and autoexec.bat would be the same for any x86 system....? I would of thought that as long as you have a cdrom driver .sys and mscdex.exe and the correct syntax in the config.sys and autoexec.bat it would work....? Post your bootdisk details that are not working so people can offer help... Smiffy Smiffy280361 Mar 13, 2003, 03:56 AM just a thought on the CD ROM Drive,is it conected to the IDE controller on the mobo or is it connected to a controller on the s/card. I seem to recall that some CDR's were connected this way, I had an AST Advantage 486 DX2/50 which was connected this way but luckily it had a boot disc and recovery CD that automated the process. :( Smiffy celtic_druid Mar 13, 2003, 04:15 AM I think by s/card Smiffy280361 meant Sound Card and not SCSI card. Dam, I I had a 1X external Sony CDRom that had it's own card... I'm guessing it ain't one of those though. duffy90210 Mar 13, 2003, 05:50 AM PS2, if you needed a bootdisk that req SCSI support, then you should be posting info on what type of board you have, or what SCSI controller is onboard, without the info, its a wild goose chase. As for card controller, you may have a CDROM card (such as a CR582/583), these require its own controller drivers, as they are non-standard IDE. Duffy90210, PS2 did'nt say whether IDE or SCSI,jspr57 was pointing out that the system could be SCSI based but I doubt it as ps2wiz is usually explicit in what he wants. I had a 1X external Sony CDRom that had it's own card... Those were the days...:D Smiffy QWERTY Mar 13, 2003, 11:16 AM Just because it was a 486 doesn't mean it may have had SCSI. It's not like they just stopped using SCSI after everyone went to Pentiums. Any system could use SCSI. More likely he has an older CD-ROM that connected to a proprietary controller on the sound card. Those were not SCSI nor IDE. ps2wiz, you need to post some details about what make\model the CD-ROM and the system is. Otherwise people are just guessing... celtic_druid Mar 13, 2003, 11:32 AM Yeah, I was also going to point out that I have a SCSI card and drives on my current system (XP 1800+) and that I never did on any of my 486 systems. I guess the point was that they had all SCSI systems back then (no IDE on the mobo)?? Never seen or heard of one though. Yes, those were the days, the caddy you had to put the CD in was pretty mad to... However when you think that you could now buy several (DVD) burners for the same price... MasterMind Mar 13, 2003, 01:05 PM waiting for your details, PS2..... Too true, in 94-95ish I bought my first and only PC from Tempo here in the UK it was a 486 DX2/50mhz, 4mb Ram,270mb hdd,1mb ATI Graphics and....4x CD ROM drive, talk about a power user..:D I also remember paying the guy at Tempo £85 to upgrade the ram from 4-8mb so that I could play 7th guest without it stuttering or taking an age to load the cut scenes <Sigh> Smiffy ps2wiz Mar 13, 2003, 05:33 PM Damn, 11 replys....in less then a day.. I don't see why this originated into a SCSI based comp, cuz it isnt... And yes the CD-ROM perfectly works, I had it on a different comp. Check out the Spec here: http://h18000.www1.hp.com/athome/classics/524cds_qs.html The odd thing that I know about it is that it has only 1 IDE channel, the HD and the CD-ROM are both on it, which are on the mobo. Thanks... Professur Mar 13, 2003, 08:48 PM What model is the drive? Creative and some other drives required their own drivers. The common OAK driver wouldn't work. ps2wiz Mar 13, 2003, 08:59 PM No sure, thats all the inforation I have (the link). Thanks... If they are on the same IDE Channel then were not looking at a propietry card cd rom driver. I take it from your post that you've been through all the std boot discs with CD ROM support.....? Can HP/Compaq offer any help at all Lifetime toll-free hardware customer support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling 1-800-345-1518 from your link,or have you got any dos/windows based diagnostics software which is able to interrogate the system? Smiffy ps2wiz Mar 14, 2003, 07:38 AM Yeah I do I already ran some Ram checkers, HD checkers, etc.. all on Floppys... I'd feel kinda ashamed callin them for such a old comp....lol Smiffy280361 Mar 14, 2003, 10:00 AM Originally posted by ps2wiz Yeah I do I already ran some Ram checkers, HD checkers, etc.. all on Floppys... I also have a new 466 Pentium, which I > am using now to send this message. > > I've tried everything else so unless someone has some other solution I think > this is my only avenue. The system has been upgraded to 32 Meg RAM, a 40X > CD-ROM etc., so I feel it is worth saving. If your Pentium uses Win95, too, you can create a bootdisk there and use it. The only thing you'll have to add is the CD-ROM driver for your CD-ROM drive in your 486. It must be added to the config.sys on the boot-disk and mscdex.exe must be added to the autoexec.bat there. That's all. ps2wiz Mar 14, 2003, 11:59 PM Ok, those are the basic cdrom drivers files/setup... I think we already got past the fact that i know how to create that...we didn't discus it, but I would most people know me enough on here to think that.. And please delete one of your posts, you double posted.. duffy90210 Mar 15, 2003, 04:36 AM Looking at the spec, as far as I can tell, it should be an IDE device, may be the drive is faulty, have you tried another CDROM ? ps2wiz Mar 15, 2003, 04:37 PM It is an ide device and yes the cdrom works ive tried it on a diferent system... ps2wiz Mar 15, 2003, 09:29 PM OMG! Finally I got it to work!! Im afraid if I tell you how, I'll jinx it, lol.. Thanks for all your help! And I spared my embaresmnet of calling Compaq for such a old comp, tech support never helps me anyways though, whatever they usually tell me I've tried, as is prabally the case with most of you. Anyways thanks again to everyone that tryed to help, & for some reason every time I post a problem it originates into a muliple page thread...lol Smiffy280361 Mar 16, 2003, 01:01 PM Originally posted by ps2wiz OMG! It involves something more complicated then that.....Turning on the Comp!! |
