VLC Mar 13, 2003, 09:35 PM To quote someone on another forum, they said - :(
I have a few hundred email filters on, but I keep getting more and more spam. No matter how many filters... I get at least 30 spam mails per day, and I put more filters on for each piece of spam (when I can, without potentially blocking legit stuff).
I never show my email address anyway, I'm sick to death of this, Is there anything I can do? I thought of just closing my current email accounts, and starting a new one, but I think that would be just too inconvenient.Nowadays all web-surfers understand this problem all too well, as I suspect, many do here, so maybe any advice on how to deal with it, could be collated in this post for all to see, while also possibly, a moderator could arrange for it to become a 'sticky' on each board :D
- or at least for a month or two.
I think then this idea of mine would benefit most people here, as i feel its getting worse these days...
PS- If I here of any new advice about this, i'll certainly add my info as i'm currently researching this matter.
'good luck to you all :)

littlejack Mar 15, 2003, 04:18 AM I have no filters, and don't get that much spam through e-mail, i do seem to be getting more and more through my mobile phone though - that is flippin pain in the rear.
Frank Incense Mar 15, 2003, 08:57 AM Roger, IS Mail Washer worthwhile ??. The feature I liked was that
it returns the e-mail as if from the ISP ,so eventually
you should get taken of mailing lists etc. Is that working for you ?
Other main concern is, how do you know for certain that its
not returning important e-mails that are not spam ??.
Thanks for any advice
Frank
prince midas Mar 16, 2003, 09:00 AM I was receiving up to 30 porn messages a week on one of my email accounts although on my other isp i received none.
Complaing to the ISP was a waste of time.
I then fitted Spamkiller 4 cost £17 and told it just to send me emails from my friends.
It works a treat.
If you tell it to send all Emails you receive Spam as well as Friends.

So you never make any new friends via e-mail coz
they could never contact you that route ?. That system
would'nt be much good for anyone that receives e-mails
from other than close friends then.

prince midas Mar 16, 2003, 11:52 AM You tell it to send everything if you want it and then ignore the obvious porn and add others to friends, Use a bit of common sense,
BlackDiamondJr Mar 16, 2003, 01:28 PM As the recepient of zero spam in the last year and a half or so, I have to admire my methods.
First, only a handful of people have the address to my main email account and they are instructed and reminded by an automated response that I do not accept forwarded messages. My email address must not appear in the CC list where it is visible to everyone on the list and easily harvested. The message must be addressed only to me or it can be sent using the BCC option.
Secondly, two filters are all I need to curtail unwanted email. Messages with "Fw" or "Fwd" in the subject line, messages that do not have my email address in the "To" are simply never downloaded from the server.
Thirdly, I established a secondary email account with a service that is pretty difficult to spam into. Juno has pretty good spam filters as they allow spamming only by themselves and thier partners. My Juno account is used when I'm forced into divulging a legit email address.
Thirdly, I surf with Active Scripting disable so I'm not tricked into clicking on those false links that spawns your email client into sending them an email (unknowingly) via scripting.
Zero spam in my regular account and Juno and Juno Partners spam only in my Juno account. Hotmail, Yahoo.......LOL. You can keep that garbage.
clook Mar 17, 2003, 04:59 AM Is this an ISP/free email or using your own domain?
If it's your own domain, hook yourself up with some hosting that allows you to put blockers and filters in there at server level so it doesn't even need to be downloaded and it gets trashed without you seeing it.
Also, a serverside application called Spam Assassin is pretty good too.
Another thing that helps make you feel better if any does get through is reporting them to these guys: http://spamcop.net/
philmeehan Mar 17, 2003, 05:33 AM I use sneakemail, which I think is very good. You create a new sneakemail address every time you want to give out your email address or register on a web site, and you give that sneakemail addy a label, e.g. cd rom guide. These sneakemail addresses then point back to your genuine email account, and any email sent to one of your sneakemail addresses has a label, so you would know if a web site was giving out your details. You could then just delete that sneakemail address, and any mail sent to it will be bounced back as an invalid email account.
Works for me.
uk_trader Mar 17, 2003, 06:04 PM I always use the bounce feature in k mail to send the mail back to the spammer as an non existing address never get any again.
im sure there must be an email client for windows that has a similiar feature.
for webmail you just have to use the bulk folder or block the email address which is pretty useless as they keep changing all the time .
Hushmail ispretty good for not getting spam.

An now for the serious stuff, here as promised is some info i've copied over from another forum i'm on...
======
Watch out for bogus emails from apparently people you know, who send you emails an program files as attachments, as nowadays some ******* people are gathering the email addresses you send to, then pose as people you've emailed to, so to send you bad stuff like a virus or junk.
For 1 example, one asks you to 'play a game'
======
I am not actually too concerned because I use an anti-virus program and since I run a macintosh the majority of viruses aren't supported by my computer OS.
=======
Rule of thumb, get a virus checker. Some of the newer viruses add your email address from an infected person's mailing address book. You can be blamed for sending viruses when you didn't. But get a virus checker which will check emails as they come in. If you don't have one, there is a free version of AVG from www.grisoft.com
If you do have one already make sure you get regular updates as new viruses appear at alarming rates.
=====
some use your e-m adres as a location to have their spamed emails re-directed to your mailbox. This process is called re-mailing.
+ virus checkers dont prevent this, they deal with the effect, which is admiting defeat, since your e-m adres should be private, until given out intentionally !
============
to prevent getting spam you could use some programs that block out a lot of spam, dont give your email address out to every website, unselect the options for 3rd party emails. dont use a msn or yahoo address unless you use a totally random name or else sign up for a pay for email address i took a trial of runbox for a month and never once recived any junk mail but then again you do need to pay for it.
============
well for msn... they just suck and give u spam period...
for yahoo... they got spam guard on so only use it to email friends or get replies from cdrom-guide thas what i usually do...
and if its a virus dont worry about gettin it unless u open the file that goes with it...
be careful theres alot of crazy email junkies out there

If you run a UNIX box like me you can push all your mail through spam assassin and practicly no spam gets through. Any spam is given a ranking of how likely it is to be spam and in my case sorted into different mail boxes.
There are alos windows versions which can integrate into your mail client (not Outlook) which is nice. Best anti-spam method I've used.
More info for windows users here: http://spamassassin.org/where.html
ps2wiz Mar 20, 2003, 04:51 PM BlackDiamondJr, try this sign up for an e-mail acount over at hotmail, don't tell the address to anyone, absolutely no one. Then don't log in for a week or so and you have 10+ messages in your inbox, excluding the welcome message. And if you wonder why...? Its casue spammers use scripts that gernerate random letters/# automatically and send out the mail. What e-mail povider do you use?

Or because MS sell you email address to spammers.

I doubt this as that would probably breach est. data security regs.
also it would encourage many a/c holders to quit msn hotmail, an msn dont want to loose customers.!! [scandal is real BAD]
1- However, if you filled in their MSN profile option, it makes your ID available to the many millions who access msn, even its guests.
2- with forums you need to hide you e-m adres in your posts, as others note this an use it.
3- if you have a website, ensure your e-m adres isnt on its 'index.html' page, as webots exist to look for e-m adres's on these pages.
4- contary to what some say, you CAN unsubscribe from junk mail senders, so long as its from a reputable company, eg- HMV, Ford, McDonalds etc.
5- Note that popmail boxes hold 200 mb of emails untill they reject inbound emails automatically.
I hope the above helps all here:)

4- Its not always worth trying to unsubscribe as it shows the email address exists which may cause more spam. Its often better to set up a filter. But you're right, the BIG companies usually let you unsubscribe easily. There is an organisation you can register with which reputable companies are supposed to check to make sure they aren't sending unwanted mail. If you sign up you shouldn't get junk mail.
5- Depends on the email host really. Hotmail/Yahoo etc its only 10's of MB where as my server will store GB's of mail before rejecting any.

Due to large volumes of Abuse complaints, if your complaint is regarding a customer from a separate Internet Service Provider then please forward the details to that provider, so that the issue may be dealt with. The following page will help you to identify which ISP the Spam has been sent from: http://www.tiscali.co.uk/cgi-bin/external.cgi?http://www.demon.net/external/index.shtml

Anybody want me to post some more info here ...?
VLC Jun 16, 2003, 12:42 PM hi - ive recently noticed that hotmail now provide a place to report spam to ie abuse@hotmail.com
also, here below is an email an ISP of mine sent me about dealing with spam....
If you still have the email, including the full header, try going to <http://spamcop.net> - this is a free service, that reports Spam . It will peruse the headers of unwanted email and (if all goes well) phrase a complaint to the system administrator responsible for the spammer's internet access. This complaint will be addressed as from you. You will have a chance to review and edit the complaint before it's sent. You are free to leave your email address blank; however, if you do this, you will not see the reply from the administrator - often a confirmation that the spammer has been kicked off.
It's worth knowing how the perpetrators of junk e-mail come up with the e-mail addresses to send their messages to. There are several sources of mailing lists, but most of them originate as the return e-mail addresses attached to Usenet postings in newsgroups.
If you post to Usenet, chances are you'll receive junk e-mail sooner or later. Avoiding Usenet entirely is one solution, albeit a fairly radical one. You might try not providing an e-mail address for your newsreader - this has the catch of not allowing people who wish to respond to your posts to get back to you personally.
There are also mailing lists about, generated by software that automatically roams the web looking for e-mail addresses embedded in web pages. This won't be a concern unless you have your own web page.
I would strongly advise against clicking on the remove/unsuscribe button as this will indicate to the sender that it is a 'live' e-mail account and your address will be sold on to further mailing lists.
philmeehan Jun 16, 2003, 01:38 PM I use Usenet a hell of a lot, and when I first started, I didn't know any better and registered with my real email. As a result, I was utterly plagued with spam. Now my Usenet address is wontreadit@all.com , a completely fictitious address, but I don't care.
