This may be a silly question but I am getting ready to add some more ram to my PC. Right now I have 1 stick of 256mb PC2700 DDR Ram. I want to upgrade to 512. Just wondering if it makes any diffrence if I use 1 stick of 512 PC2700 or If I add another 256 stick to the one I got. I have 3 slots but may want to add more later so I was thinking about just going ahead and getting the 512 stick.
In short. Will 2 sticks of 256 out perform 1 stick of 512?

Not really...unless you're using the nForce2 or some other dual-memory chipset. Then you'd want two sticks as the nForce2 takes advantage of the dual sticks. Otherwise, get that 512 stick.

I'd have said yes, but just slightly. It's probably not going to make much difference. If you can afford 512MB get that so you have 2 more slots free for upgrades.

I have done this recently on a simsilar setup to you.
I have Gigabyte GA-7VXE. 1800+, I had 256 ddr bought a 512 stick of crucial from komplett. Put the 512 in the 1st slot & the 256 in the second slot (presumed this was the correct order) anyhow comp is working spot on & really have noticed a difference with 768ram on. Like you would have I still have a spare slot if needs arise.
I noted the price difference between 256 to 512 wasn't that much so just went for 512.

Just to clear the misconception if any... 512MB modules clock the same way that 256MB modules do.

I'd say yes, because the memory controler wil only have to operate one sitck instead of two.
