What's the deal with CD-RW's now that Windows XP has some kind of software built into Explorer now?

I used to have to format a CD-RW through Easy CD Creator (aka Direct CD) and then I could use them through the drive letter.

Now I'm told that you can drag n' drop through explorer and then click the "burn file to CD now" link and the burn does itself. Except that, I get errors and the burn doesn't work.

What happened to the format process? It is no longer necessary? Or is it still advisable to use Direct CD and do a full format?

I have Easy CD Creator 5.2... Platinum and an MSI 48x24x48.

Confused,
