Hi mate i bought a compaq evon1015v for just under £700 from www.wstore.co.uk:
here are the specs there are 3 models http://www.hpstore.hp.co.uk/section?SID=4e9934c35670e3b8aeda42beb516801b5a9:12 22&secid=16691

hp are doing some sort of offer on them as well, but these guys undercut hp's price by a significant amount in some cases.

got an additional 256 mb ram (made by crucial) compatible with the laptop for £30 so i got the intermediate spec machine (14", mobile athlon xp 2000+, 256mb (+additional 256) ram, 16 mb ati graphics (shared with ram), 30gb hd, dvd player) for £720 all in (including postage)- had it for 3 days and as yet can't complain really.

was the best spec i could find for the price- hope it helps

budget laptop is kinda a contradiction in terms. You can get a PC from walmart for 200 bucks, but a new laptop is going to start at, at least 700-800. If thats to high for ya, ur going to be using auction sites for older models, or a refurb place.
Personally I stay away from refurbs, myself.
Much as I hate to say it, I bought a Dell inspiron 1100, few months ago. They had the best price and a good deal going on. 2 gig celeron, dvd drive, 256 ram, and 20 gig hard drive for under 800 bucks.

I'd stay away from hp/compaq (same thing now), never seen an HP laptop last very long without issues. Good luck M8, personally I can't wait till laptops drop in price with pc's.............

I prefer dell to compaq or hp.
