Recently installed mandrake linux 9.1, ive got geforce 2 mx on the system, but the x windows display(KDE OR Gnome) is always off centre, slightly to the right so i cant access the scroolbar when browsing and can only see half the clock in the bottom right corner.
I thought it might be a video driver problem so downloaded nvidia drivers for the card( supposedly compatible with ML 9.1) but now when i boot it just flashes a nvidia logo splash screen a couple of times then freezes.
I dont mind reinstalling as ive only just installed and have no important files to lose but i'm hoping someone can fix the off centre display?as i'm pretty new to linux.
Also how can i boot to the command prompt(level 3 i think)instead of a GUI automatically?.
thanks in advance

You can always adjust monitor X and Y axis. You are right on one thing that its a driver characteristics. There is nothing else that can be done.

I believe your answer lies in the Mandrake Control Center. In the Boot section tou have the ability to disable the X server which will boot to a command prompt instead.
As for the off center bit, you can physically adjust the monitor or you can select a resolution and refresh rate that centers and fill the screen. i used to readjust the monitor but it became a royal pain to keep adjusting everytime I switch back and forth between Linux and Windows. My GeForce 4 Ti 4200 looks great and centered at 1280 X 1024.

Yoiu can edit those files using a text editor such as GEdit, Kate, KEdit or KWrite and just save the file. The all function similiar to Notepad.

I imagine you did a standard install.
Goto the root/etc/lil.conf file and alter it to start to command prompt.
